I confess that I have been somewhat flippant in my posts on the presidential campaign, and perhaps not been treating the subject with as much gravitas as it deserves.<\/p>\n

I encourage all readers to be informed by our Catholic bishops about their proper rights and responsibilities. Their wise counsel is to be found here<\/a> in a wonderful document about faithful citizenship.<\/p>\n

One paragraph in particular caught my eye. We are often told that we mustn\u2019t be single issue voters, however at times there is a single issue that is so important that it is the foundation of all other issues. Thus the issue of abortion strikes at the very root of human life and the existence of the human family.<\/p>\n

The bishops say this in paragraph 42 of the above document:<\/p>\n

As Catholics we are not single-issue voters. A candidate\u2019s position on a single issue is not sufficient to guarantee a voter\u2019s support. Yet a candidate\u2019s position on a single issue that involves an intrinsic evil, such as support for legal abortion or the promotion of racism, may legitimately lead a voter to disqualify a candidate from receiving support.<\/em>

In other words, you shouldn\u2019t vote for a candidate over a single issue, but it is legitimate not to vote for a candidate because of his position on an important issue.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
