It was a joy today to celebrate Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St Augustine with our eighth graders. You can see the still existing altar rail in this church, so I took the opportunity to instruct them how to kneel at an altar rail to receive communion. All of the Catholics (adults too) had never done this before.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
On the bus on the way home I asked some of the boys what they thought:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cIt was just the same as receiving communion the other way.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s certainly theologically true. Did anyone else feel differently about it?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cNot really.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI did. I thought it was cool.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cYeh, I thought it was cool too.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWhy was that?\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cBecause it was different. It made me think about it more.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cAny other thoughts?\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI liked it because it felt more holy.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cIt felt more holy. Why was that?\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cBecause you were there above us, and God is above us, and it was like he was coming down to us, you know?\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI think so. So you\u2019re saying when you kneel you feel closer to God?\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cMore like that\u2019s the right way to receive him.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI see. Have you seen people receiving communion the other way irreverently?\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI have. Sometimes people at our church talk while they\u2019re waiting in line.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cMmm. Not good. People should be silent.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWould you like to receive communion that way again?\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cI wouldn\u2019t mind. When are we going to stop to eat?\u201d<\/div>\n
