<\/div>\n
Every year during Lent I am asked to conduct a Lenten mission in a parish. On the first night I tell my conversion story. On the second I talk about the \u201cattach of the Ism\u2019s\u201d. These are twelve ways of thinking that have invaded our society and which undermine our Catholic faith.<\/p>\n
1. Individualism \u2013 I\u2019ll do it My Way
\n2. Eclecticism \u2013 Cafeteria Catholicism
\n3. Sentimentalism \u2013 If it Feels Good it must be True<\/p>\n
4. Materialism \u2013 What You See if What You Get
\n5. Scientism \u2013 Only Scientific Knowledge is Valid
\n6. Utilitarianism \u2013 What Works is What\u2019s True<\/p>\n
7. Nationalism \u2013 My Country or Ethnic Group Right or Wrong
\n8. Sectarianism \u2013 My Church or My Ideology Right or Wrong
\n9. Elitism \u2013 The Survival of the Fittest<\/p>\n
10. Fideism \u2013 Fundamentalist and Anti-Intellectual
\n11. Historicism \u2013 \u201cTruth\u201d is determined by historical circumstances
\n12. Progressivism \u2013 Every Day in Every Way We\u2019re Getting Better and Better!<\/p>\n
The neat thing about these twelve is that they are countered by being One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic. The first set of three are attacks on the unity of Church Authority and Church Teaching, so are countered by being \u201cOne\u201d The second set of three are attacks on the supernatural, on grace, on the belief in an afterlife. The are, at heart, atheistic, so they are countered by the \u201cHoly\u201d. The third set of three are counted by \u201cCatholic\u201d because they are attacks on the universality of the Church. The fourth set of three are countered by \u201cApostolic\u201d because they are attacks on the historicity, antiquity and dynamic continuity of the Church.<\/p>\n
The third night of the mission I discuss how we as parishes, families and individuals can be more \u201cOne, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic.\u201d<\/p>\n
