<\/a>During our most-recent vacation\/cross-country trek\/annual ordeal<\/a>, I stumbled across an interesting (if hilariously unanticipated) side-effect of my sons\u2019 speedy consumption of the latest<\/a> and now-troubled<\/a>\u00a0season of \u201cThe Legend of Korra.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\nWhen we travel, we tend to\u00a0stop at McDonald\u2019s for meals. Fast food is a rarity for us, so it always feels like a bit of a reward for the boys. Plus, it\u2019s\u2026well\u2026fast. And about as cheap and tidy a way to deal with the truly terrifying amounts of food<\/a> required to keep them happy (or at last quiet)<\/a> as we hurtle along the Interstate(s).<\/p>\n Anyway, as we pulled away from a Mickey D\u2019s somewhere in Northern Utah and begin \u2026um\u2026distributing lunch<\/a> throughout the van, David (#4 Son)<\/a> piped up from the back: \u201cDo we have anything other than hamburgers? Because I\u2019m trying to be a vegetarian!\u201d<\/p>\n Great. Driving down the Utah highway at 80+ MPH with 25+ hamburgers, and I\u2019ve got a kid that doesn\u2019t want meat<\/a>.<\/p>\n Thinking back, it should not have come as a complete shock. The Air Nomads from \u201cLegend of Korra\u201d (and from the even-better \u201cAvatar: The Last Airbender\u201d<\/a>) are the coolest\/chillest of the four tribes. And they\u2019re (by most accounts<\/a>, anyway) vegetarians<\/a>. So, in hindsight, not a shock. But at the time, downright\u00a0unsettlin\u2019<\/a>. And more than a little inconvenient<\/a>.<\/p>\n Luckily, though, James (Son #5<\/a>) was sitting right behind him. James is quickly becoming the least-predicable of the bunch (at least to me), and he\u2019s got a quick-and-quirky sense of humor. (I can\u2019t really tell where he\u2019s going, most of the time. But it\u2019s fun to tag along.)<\/p>\n All of which helps to explain the fact that immediately after the David bombshell<\/a>, Jamie piped up entirely unprompted from the seat behind him:<\/p>\n \u201cIs there such a thing as a meatetarian?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2026Because THAT\u2019S\u00a0what I\u2019m trying\u00a0to be!\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
