July 14th 2015 is the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn. The mountain, which is probably the most photographed in the world, was in the headlines again.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In preparation for the anniversary celebrations, Swiss mountaineering specialist Mammut, together with the Zermatt mountain guides traced the route over the H\u00f6rnligrat ridge in a chain of lights, paying homage to the first ascent of the roped party with Edward Whymper.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The accompanying video\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0impressive (technically and visually), as one would expect. But the photographs<\/a>\u00a0are the things that will really blow you away.<\/p>\n

That second one, in particular, is just\u00a0otherworldly. Such\u00a0a strange mixture of weightlessness and massiveness\u00a0and halos<\/a>. (Mist is a wonderful thing to photograph, in large part do to that very \u201cotherworldly-ness\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and weightlessness and its halo effect<\/a>.)<\/span><\/p>\n

B\u00f6sch<\/a>, a photographer and mountain guide (with a Masters in geography from the University of Z\u00fcrich) who has worked for more then 30 years as a freelance photographer,\u00a0reflected on what it is that makes this kind of photography so challenging. Challenging\u00a0from an artistic<\/em> perspective, that is. (Physically, the challenges are pretty obvious<\/a>.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The Matterhorn is one of the most photographed mountains in the world. Its extraordinary form makes it easy to take a good photo. Paradoxically that was what made it so challenging, because it makes it so difficult to produce a breathtaking photo.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
