But to this day, one of the strongest (and most beloved) remains our weekly tidying of the house to the upbeat stylins\u2019 of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Best-Bothy-Band\/dp\/B0010V4TOG\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe Best of the Bothy Band.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For someone blessed with a boundless supply of youthful energy, the most frequently played track was (unsurprisingly) the jig-and-reel set, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4GQibSm-Z2g\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cLeitrim Fancy\/Round The World For The Sport\/Rip The Calico\/Martin Wynne\u2019s\/The Enchanted Lady\/The Holy Land.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0But the most fascinating cut was always <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/3aFAQvhA9kY\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cFionnghuala\u201d<\/a> \u2014 a weird and wonderful example of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puirt_a_beul\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cPuirt \u00e0 beul (mouth music).\u201d<\/a> To this day, it remains one of the most peculiar (and magical) sounds I\u2019ve heard, cropping\u00a0up from time to time on my playlists and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.celticlyricscorner.net\/puirt\/fionnghuala.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">bringing me to a halt<\/a>\u00a0whenever it appears. Background music it most definitely is not; it craves (even demands) attention.<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, a quick YouTubin\u2019 session that began with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qczDug2BNRo\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Julie Fowlis\u2019<\/a>\u00a0wonderful performance of <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/5WzJUb4Su54\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u00a0\u201cTouch the Sky\u201d<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1217209\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cBrave\u201d<\/a> soundtrack led me to this:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"An\u00fana : Fionnghuala, (arr. Michael McGlynn\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OM8Uv5RFOyM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>Yep. I still love it. And I defy anyone to listen to those hypnotic rhythms without at least a bit of toe-tapping.<\/p>\n<p>This particular performance comes from the Irish vocal group <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anuna.ie\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">An\u00fana<\/a>, and features their founder (and frequent composer), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelmcglynn.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Michael McGlynn<\/a>. A <a href=\"http:\/\/etd.lsu.edu\/docs\/available\/etd-11082010-131647\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">LSU thesis on his works<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 Man, I love the Internet \u2014 \u00a0says that \u201crhythm is an important component\u201d of his work, and that \u201d development occurs primarily through repetition.\u201d No wonder he\u2019s drawn to \u201cFionnghuala.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was Chanticleer\u2019s performance of his <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/lU71HPXMsHg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cAgnus Dei\u201d<\/a>, though \u2014 brought to my attention by a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DecentFilms\/status\/292863925932945408\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">pair<\/a>\u00a0of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DecentFilms\/status\/292864697873625088\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">tweets<\/a> from Steven Greydanus \u2014 that served as the catalyst for today\u2019s musical recollections. And I am glad for the reminder. (McGlynn\u2019s website also\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/michaelmcglynn.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/03\/the-celtic-mass-recording-sessions-summer-2013-guest-blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">discusses the imminent release<\/a> of the world-premiere recording of his \u201cCeltic Mass.\u201d Color me intrigued.)<\/p>\n<p>Just don\u2019t get me started on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PetBFKdvM4Q\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mongolian Throat Singing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1373\" title=\"Anuna\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/109\/2013\/01\/Anuna.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"381\"><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My youth is full of musical memories, ranging from Sunday afternoon brushes with\u00a0my father\u2019s classical record collection to my uncle\u2019s frequent performances of Simon and Garfunkel\u00a0classics in our family library.
