$\"IrisPoster\"$ <\/a>Today\u2019s film is perhaps best thumbnail-sketched as \u201c The Legendary<\/a>, Dearly -Departed<\/a> Documentarian, Albert Maysles<\/a>, Makes A Masterful Documentary About Edna Mode.\u201d It\u2019s a little bit of an over-simplification, because 94-year-old fashion icon Iris Apfel<\/a> isn\u2019t quite as aggressively sarcastic (or as short)<\/a> as Edna. But the glasses are spot-on<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Yes, I\u2019m talking about Iris<\/a><\/em>, currently streaming on NETFLIX INSTANT<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and rentable from\u00a0AMAZON INSTANT($)<\/a> $\"\"$ <\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Albert Maysles focuses on a fashion legend, who at 93 is still at the top of her game, choosing dresses, advising models and haggling with buyers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/iframe>\nMaysles had the most extraordinary fly-on-the-wall ability, and spun a wonderful career out of training his camera on\u00a0Bizarre-Yet-Fascinating Folks doing\u00a0Bizarre-Yet-Fascinating Things \u2014 (Yes, I\u2019m <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/summathissummathat\/2015\/03\/svs-grey-gardens\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">looking at you, Grey Gardens<\/em>!<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and this film is certainly no exception to that rule. But unlike the quirky-and-vaguely-unbalanced folks at the heart of Gardens<\/em>, Iris is not unsettling. Not really. Sure she\u2019s wildly eccentric, but there\u2019s more to love (and less to trouble) about her . The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2PD7qi8VK_o\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cCarl-and-Ellie\u201d interactions<\/a> with her 100-year-old husband are really touching \u2014 a fascinating example of two incredibly odd birds that fit together perfectly. (Did they fit together 60+ years ago? Who knows. But the decades\u00a0have certainly worn down the rough edges, and now they are perfect for one another.)<\/p>\nLike Maysles\u2019 other works, there are some extraordinarily small (yet powerful) details, like watching the reflections in Iris\u2019 huge, round glasses; seeing things through her eyes. Or the recurring moments where she rubs the back of her husband\u2019s head as she stands next to him. Or the\u00a0moments when she seems very tired. And sometimes, very sad. But usually when no one\u2019s looking. (No one but Albert, that is.)<\/p>\nUnlike some of Maysles\u2019 other works, though, it\u2019s much less \u201cfly-on-the-wall.\u201d There are a number of charming moments where Iris acknowledges Maysles\u2019 presence, and a few (equally charming) where she actually interacts with him. There\u2019s even a moment or two where you see the master at work, hunched over his camera and refusing to look away no matter the distraction.
