The legendary Peter O\u2019Toole passed away on Saturday<\/a>. When I first heard the news, I was reminded of a question Looking Closer\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0Jeffrey Overstreet<\/a> asked his readers last year: Which is your favorite<\/em> O\u2019Toole performance<\/a>?<\/p>\n

At the time, I remember being grateful that he didn\u2019t say \u201cbest performance,\u201d because I\u2019m not sure I could answer that question. \u201cFavorite,\u201d though? That\u2019s actually pretty easy for me: Simon Dermott, from How to Steal a Million<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em>It\u2019s\u00a0a wonderful, hilarious film, and one that I can vividly remember watching for the first time, primarily<\/em> because I was so surprised by how much funnier O\u2019Toole was than I was expecting him to be. It remains remains near the top of my \u201cfavorite comedies\u201d list in large part because of that unexpected humor, and because of his extraordinary chemistry with Audrey Hepburn. (It also<\/em> has Eli Wallach, which bolsters its \u201cMust See\u201d status<\/a>, at least in my book. \u00a0And did I mention that its\u00a0really, really<\/em> hilarious?<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Digging about just now in search of Jeff\u2019s original post, I was reminded of another interesting O\u2019Toole tidbit<\/a>: He is one of only a quartet of actors to receive Oscar nominations for playing the same character in two separate films: Bing Crosby\u2019s Father O\u2019Malley in Going My Way<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and The Bells of St. Mary\u2019s<\/a>;<\/em>\u00a0Paul Newman\u2019s Fast Eddie Felson in\u00a0The Hustler<\/a><\/em> and The Color of Money<\/a><\/em>;\u00a0Al Pacino\u2019s Michael Corleone in The Godfather<\/a><\/em> and The Godfather, Part II<\/a><\/em>; and, of course, O\u2019Toole\u2019s King Henry II, from Becket<\/a><\/em> and The Lion in Winter<\/a><\/em>.
