From Portland train stabbings to a politician body slamming a reporter to a comedian pretending to decapitate Donald Trump, these three stories are symptomatic of a larger problem within American culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Violence On a Portland Train<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portlandia. I love my home town. It is as quirky, charming, and rainy as you think it is. And like many American cities, it sadly has a racist and violent streak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My dad lives in a suburb of Portland. He loves to ride the Max Line in and out of the city. Of course, after the tragic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2017\/05\/28\/brave-and-selfless-oregon-stabbing-victims-hailed-as-heroes\/?utm_term=.3ca1509ae6d5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stabbings last week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I was concerned about him. So, I called him to ask how he was doing with the news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know if I can ride MAX anymore,\u201d he reflected. The murder of two men attempting to protect a Muslim woman and her African American friend rattled him. But he was rattled a few weeks ago, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was riding MAX to the airport. He placed his luggage a few feet away as he sat in a section of the train that was nearly empty. At the next stop, a man entered the train and the following conversation between him, my dad, and another man (Man 2) who was sitting near my dad ensued:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Man: Whose luggage is this?!?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dad: Umm\u2026That\u2019s mine\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Man: Move it out of my way!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Man 2: Hey! Leave this man alone. He\u2019s not causing any problems. The luggage isn\u2019t in your way. <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are plenty of places to sit.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Man: Hey! Mind your own business!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Man 2: (Pulls out a black rectangular box from his pocket and points it at the man) You better go sit down over there or I\u2019m gonna tase you!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that point the man walked away. It was a scary situation that escalated quickly and could have led to violence. Thankfully, it didn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Violence in Politics: Body Slams<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A week before the murders in Portland, Montana Congressional candidate Greg Gianforte body slammed and punched Ben Jacobs, a reporter for the Guardian. Jacobs asked Gianforte a question about Trump\u2019s budget proposal. Within seconds, Jacobs found himself lying on the ground with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2017\/may\/30\/guardian-reporter-ben-jacobs-new-glasses\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his glasses broken<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gianforte\u2019s team immediately blamed Jacobs for the escalation of violence. After all, Jacobs was \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2017\/5\/25\/15689924\/greg-gianforte-defense-assault\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asking badgering questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Gianforte\u2019s spokesperson added, \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that this aggressive behavior from a liberal journalist created this scene at our campaign volunteer BBQ.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next day, Gianforte won the election. He decided he should apologize in his acceptance speech. \u201cLast night I made a mistake. I took an action that I can\u2019t take back and I\u2019m not proud of what happened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Violence: Kathy Griffin Is Not Funny<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there\u2019s comedian Kathy Griffin\u2019s photo shoot where she\u2019s pretending to decapitate Trump\u2019s head. Really? A joke? A few days after the stabbings in Portland? It was insensitive, stupid, and just not funny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/05\/31\/media\/cnn-kathy-griffin\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">CNN rightfully fired her<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/squatty-potty-drops-kathy-griffin-after-trump-photo-shoot-2017-5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Squatty Potty<\/a> immediately saw her crappy behavior for what is was and dumped her from their upcoming campaign. (Hey, I have three children. Poop jokes come naturally to me\u2026) \u00a0Republicans are demanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/irreverin\/2017\/06\/violence-not-progressive-value\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">liberals apologize<\/a> for her actions. Liberals claim Republicans are being hypocritical about \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/crooksandliars.com\/2017\/05\/right-wingers-despicable-hypocrisy-over\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">political correctness.<\/a>\u201d As if she was just being politically incorrect\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body slams. Murder. Decapitation. My God. How did we get here?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Violence: How Did We Get Here<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progressives, like myself, are quick to blame Donald Trump. Trump\u2019s campaign rhetoric was full of hate and vitriol. He disparaged Muslims and hispanics and women and the disabled and the media and he used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/opinion\/2016\/09\/24\/trump-coded-racism-dangerous-his-lies-debate-moderators-must-call-out\/ugYXsk9Lq1L5hxiTap3ppN\/story.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coded racist language<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against African Americans. As a populist, he quickly moved from mastering the art of the deal to mastering the nefarious art of scapegoating \u2013 of channeling political hostility toward minority populations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Donald Trump himself makes a convenient scapegoat for me and my fellow progressives. Yes, Donald Trump often shows hostility toward minority groups, but it\u2019s far too easy for us to mirror his hostility. Kathy Griffin went too far for most progressives, but her behavior wasn\u2019t created in a vacuum. It was the result of a culture that responds to hostility with hostility. That culture of hostility infects conservatives, liberals, and everyone in between.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ravenfoundation.org\/meet-rene-girard\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ren\u00e9 Girard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calls this mirroring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ravenfoundation.org\/mimetic-theory-101-videos\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mimesis<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a word that refers to the unconscious capacity we have to absorb everything around us, but especially emotions. When someone smiles at you, you instantly smile back. But when someone frowns at you, you frown back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Girard\u2019s mimetic theory explains why ideas, thoughts, and emotions spread contagiously. But Girard spent his life warning us that violence is the most mimetic aspect of human beings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Where Do We Go From Here?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to know how we got to this point, but it\u2019s even more important to know how to move forward. Blaming Trump is too easy. In fact, for most of us, blaming Trump for murders on a train and political body slams will only make us just as hostile as he is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can\u2019t control Trump. We can\u2019t control our neighbors or our fellow passengers on the train. Heck, I can\u2019t control my children. The only person I can control is myself, and, frankly, I have a hard enough time doing that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that\u2019s where we need to start. Instead of mirroring the hostility and violence in our culture, we would do well to look into a different mirror.
