This past week I had the pleasure of presenting at the Salem Witchcraft and Folklore Festival – in Salem, Massachusetts. This year’s event had the theme of “Tending the Witchflame: Resilience, Resistance, and Ritual in Times of Turmoil.” Many of the presentations touched on this theme in some way, including my own which was “Sigils and Magical Resistance.” The class took place in person and virtually at 10am on Friday, August 22nd.
Crafting Sigils for Change
In the class I covered what sigils are, how they can be used for magical resistance, as well as showcasing a range of shared magic sigils. I also broke down the Sigil Witchery method and covered suggestions on creative effective community sigils as well as things to be aware of. There’s a lot that sigils can do – and things they can’t do. We explored realistic spheres of influence as well how important a basic magical practice is for creating a foundation for change.
Here’s just a few of the ways sigils can be used in magical resistance work that we covered:
- Apply to protect bodies, places, concepts
- Community crafting activity
- Symbol as a succinct way to focus a movement, group, or idea
- As an emblem for collective shift
- For tapping into or connecting with certain spirits, deities, egregores, etc
Then at the end of the class, we co-created a sigil. We decided to craft an emblem-like sigil that helps create a future focus for our work and goals. I am sharing it here so that even if you didn’t take the class, it may help you and your community as well. My appreciation to all of the students who helped craft this sigil and for the event for making this possible.
Here’s a photo of the whiteboard from class:

How To Use This Sigil
This is a shared magic sigil. You are welcome to use this sigil however you see fit that is in alignment with the intent of the sigil and the licensing details below.
Here are some ideas for use:
– place the sigil on your altar, focusing on use during the new moon (first crescent) to the full moon
– use as a ritual or community gathering focus, for meditation, spellcraft, and other workings
– place on a white, green, yellow, or blue candle and burn as needed.
