charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Back in the day, the primary exchange of information and ideas in the P-word Community was through magazines: hard-copy, printed paper publications that came out monthly, every other month, quarterly, or desperately maybe once a year if lucky. \u00a0That meant it could take weeks or months for an article I wrote to get published, instead of being up a second after I click \u201cpublish\u201d on this blog.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, <del>arguments<\/del> discussions that happened in the letters sections would go back and forth over an extremely long time. \u00a0Grandsire Sparklepants would have his say in one issue, and Archwitch de Cathair would respond with her say in the next. \u00a0And it would go on and on, with other people joining in, until there was the next issue to<del> argue<\/del> discuss.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_156\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-156\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-156\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/654\/2016\/08\/IMG_6157-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"illustration by the author\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-156\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">illustration by the author<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The pace was about as slow as a snail riding a turtle latched on the back of a narcoleptic sloth.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty safe to say, the Internet sped the whole process up \u2013 by a LOT. \u00a0Which is great for the spread of information and ideas. \u00a0But in terms of actual communication, it has left a fair chunk of the general population in the dust and evolved other habits that appear to be communication, but fall short in actuality.<\/p>\n<p><em><b>Communication<\/b> (from Latin comm\u016bnic\u0101re, meaning \u201cto share\u201d<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Communication#cite_note-1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>) is the act of conveying intended <a title=\"Meaning (semiotics)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meaning_(semiotics)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">meanings<\/a> from one <a title=\"Subject (philosophy)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Subject_(philosophy)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">entity<\/a> or <a title=\"Organization\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Organization\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">group<\/a> to another through the use of mutually understood <a title=\"Sign\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sign\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">signs<\/a> and\u00a0<a title=\"Semiosis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Semiosis\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">semiotic<\/a> rules. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Communication\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">(source)<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The key words in the above definition are \u201cmutually understood\u2026rules.\u201d \u00a0 And when you\u2019re dealing with a large group of people who may all be using the same tool, but are coming at it from difference points of familiarity, conflict is going to arise without the involvement\u00a0of mutual understanding. \u00a0I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/tempest\/2016\/08\/too-young-too-old-but-just-right.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">talked about the age\/generation\/experience gap here<\/a>, and I firmly believe it\u2019s something we ALL need to understand.<\/p>\n<p>My parents in their late 60\u2019s\/early 70\u2019s interact and understand the Internet differently than my generation does (late 30\u2019s-early 40\u2019s) who encountered it first in high school\/college. \u00a0And we\u2019re interacting with it differently than those who were born<del>\u00a0in the Matrix<\/del> with the Internet as a part of daily life. \u00a0From a group of people whose discussions happened either in person, or through a lengthy thought-out exchange through letters, to my generation of in-between\u2019s, to the next generation for whom everything is instantaneous: these are all very different ways of communicating.<\/p>\n<p>What I think is awesome and amazing about the younger generation is their ability to speak up and to speak out when they see something they believe is wrong. \u00a0They are the generation raised in \u201cif you see something, say something.\u201d However, this is rarely an effective way of crossing generational communication gaps, especially when dealing with people who are used to having long, in-depth conversations via letter.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you unfamiliar about how that worked, that format pretty much went like this: \u201cDear editor, Cauldron Cathy is incorrect in her use of the word \u201cfairybite\u201d because of X and Y, by way of source Z. \u00a0It\u2019s best interpreted this way to avoid total and utter chaos because\u2026.\u201d and so forth for paragraphs. \u00a0Cauldron Cathy then would reply in the next issue of the magazine, \u201cDear DruidyDan, actually my source for \u201cfairybite\u201d is correct because of A and B, by way of C, but I do understand where you are coming from\u201d + 6 more paragraphs about how it doesn\u2019t bring about total and utter chaos. \u00a0Next issue: \u201cDear Cauldron Cathy, that\u2019s fascinating and I wasn\u2019t aware of that C material, thank you. I understand where you are coming from. I still think that in X situation that\u2026\u201d And so forth.<\/p>\n<p>All of this taking place in a \u201cpublic\u201d setting that really wasn\u2019t that public (as you had to purchase the magazine, be a subscriber, borrow it from your friend, etc), and we\u2019re talking anywhere from distribution of maybe several hundred to maybe several thousand typically.<\/p>\n<p>The time and place was very different\u00a0versus\u00a0the immediate interface of Facebook and similar social media. \u00a0It\u2019s very easy to type up a quick response to someone who has upset, angered, scared, or pissed you off in some way and BOOM it\u2019s there. You can tell them they\u2019re WRONG RIGHT THEN AND THERE! Wow, that\u2019s amazing \u2013 and well, not exactly communicating with them in way that could cause more effective, lasting change. \u00a0Then that exchange can be screenshot and shared with far more people than it was ever intended to seen by, for better or for worse. This is a major flaw in the Call-Out Culture, as there tends to be more focus on the calling out, versus taking the time to address the issue, in turn alienating the person you\u2019re trying to make more aware.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/briarpatchmagazine.com\/articles\/view\/a-note-on-call-out-culture\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">In his very insightful article,<\/a> Asam Ahmad talks about the\u00a0problematic aspects\u00a0of Call-Out Culture and makes a recommendation for what he\u00a0describes as\u00a0Call-In culture. \u00a0I\u2019m going to play the semantics game, and take it a little differently: I want to call it Come-To Culture. When I think of calling, I feel like it\u2019s an attempt to connect via communication but neither party is quite exactly meeting in the middle. Think about cat-calls that are meant to be one-sided and other forms of shouting which talks about not wanting to get closer to talk for real. Also think about the cellular delay of phone calls which several studies have shown alter how we feel and talk with one another. (And personally, I am NOT a fan of phone calls). \u00a0But if you COME to a meeting point, if you come to the table, you come together to both discuss in a respectful manner. \u00a0<em>(You may also think of it as a \u201cCome-To Jesus\u201d moment, but insert your favorite deity instead, the sentiment is right.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Those letters in magazines were a meeting place \u2013 and because of the time involved in writing and printing, it gave us time to reflect, cool-off and think. \u00a0And it was said in a community of our peers who enjoyed reading the debate and understood the context.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does this have to do with P-wordism and Witchcraft? A LOT.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/tempest\/2016\/06\/the-magick-of-words.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\"> I have talked about the importance of your word and the meaning in it.<\/a>\u00a0 Before we fire off responses, we need to understand that our words have power. Are we using them as bullets or an offer of hands? Do we want to create and foster community through exchange and healing, or do we wish to alienate and shame?
