In this episode, I tackle a couple of taboos about money and Witchcraft \u2013 in particularly getting paid.\u00a0 This topic is one of those sticky issues that pops up again and again.\u00a0 Spoiler alert: money is a stand in \u2013 just like much of what we use with sympathetic magic. It represents something else. More thoughts after the video.<\/p>\n
Warning: strong language ahead, because I have feelings about this.<\/p>\n
<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So it would be great if we could just all trade and barter for goods and services.\u00a0 It would also be wonderful if some people didn\u2019t try to willingly rip off other people.\u00a0 However, modern society doesn\u2019t really allow the barter\/trade system for most things (utilities, mortgages, car payments, public transport, etc).\u00a0 Also, as I am reminded on a daily basis: humans are going to human.\u00a0 There are assholes out there, but there are also wonderful people (and I like to think there are more of the latter than the former) \u2013 so just try to keep that in mind.\u00a0 Just because someone is overcharging for something or isn\u2019t qualified to do it \u2013 doesn\u2019t mean you have to support them, nor does it mean that other people are doing it wrong.<\/p>\n<p>I saw a comment (oddly unrelated to the thread) that asked \u201care you doing this for money or for spirituality\u201d and I thought, \u201chow small and narrow.\u201d\u00a0 Seriously, these things do not have to be separate or unrelated.\u00a0 We need to stop separating everything into sacred\/profane, spiritual\/mundane.\u00a0 It\u2019s a false dichotomy that continues to fail society again and again. Something can be spiritual and material as well. Duh. That\u2019s the nature of human existence.\u00a0 We\u2019re spirits in physical format. There\u2019s a price for that as well.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4371\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4371\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4371\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/654\/2020\/03\/thought-catalog-Xeo_7HSwYsA-unsplash-e1583359860562.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"449\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4371\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This image brings to mind the practice of placing coins on the eyes of the recently departed, to pay their way. What\u2019s more spiritual than paying Death??<br>Photo by Thought Catalog on Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I can be good at something naturally, feel strongly about it, do the necessary work I believe in \u2013 and also receive proper payment for my services. Money does not take away from the quality or spiritual power of my work.\u00a0 In fact, people tend to value things they pay for (or otherwise engage in a similar exchange), more than things they get for free. Why? Because I think deep down, we do understand the value of an equal exchange.\u00a0 If someone values their work enough to be paid for it in some way, then it takes on worth in our eyes and feels balanced.\u00a0 Even if that exchange is simply a token, it feels worthy.\u00a0 Weaving, connection, magic \u2013 happens through give and take.<\/p>\n<p>So if you are providing a service that you are qualified and skilled to offer, you should be charging for it.\u00a0 That covers magical supplies, artwork, music, readings, and lessons \u2013 among other things.\u00a0 Figuring out how and what to charge can be a bit more difficult, but looking at the pricing of similar services and products \u2013 IN YOUR AREA \u2013\u00a0 is a good place to start.\u00a0 And don\u2019t undercut \u2013 that doesn\u2019t serve you or anyone else well.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4376\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4376\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4376\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/654\/2020\/03\/christine-roy-ir5MHI6rPg0-unsplash-e1583360678707.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"402\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Christine Roy on Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Folks talking about \u201cbut teaching the Craft!\u201d \u2013 if you are doing it within a closed group, then there\u2019s generally some sort of exchange happening, if the teacher is wise.\u00a0 If a group is healthy with long-standing members, there has likely been an investment of some sort \u2013 whether through helping to pay for space or time, bringing food for ritual, volunteering to help out at events, etc.\u00a0 \u00a0When I teach workshops all over at shops \u2013 the money covers my time and the shop\u2019s space.\u00a0 It is a one-time thing that is different than a coven\u2019s structure of learning in terms of relationship, frequency, and overall commitment.\u00a0 A tuition fee covers the special opportunity for education.\u00a0 Basically regardless of how it\u2019s being done, the main takeaway should be: the rules and expectations should be laid clearly on the table for everyone to understand, people\u2019s autonomy and consent must not be violated, and both parties are part of the exchange.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In which I tackle a couple of taboos about money and Witchcraft – in particularly paying and getting paid.\u00a0 This topic is one of those sticky issues that pops up again and again.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2676,"featured_media":4371,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[15,12,805],"tags":[883,1289,1286,69,1283,368,826,7,4],"class_list":["post-4367","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-metaphysics","category-modernpractice","category-video","tag-6-minutes-of-witchcraft","tag-capitalism","tag-commerce","tag-magic","tag-money","tag-the-craft","tag-video","tag-witch","tag-witchcraft"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
