Just two quick thoughts on the fascinating and stunning victory<\/strong> of Republican Scott Brown over the Democrat, Martha Coakley, and both of them respond to remarks heard on television after Coakley\u2019s concession:<\/p>\n 1) Juan Williams and Sean Hannity<\/strong> discussing what this means for Obamacare. In response to the notion that this unprecedented upset might inspire Barack Obama to -like Bill Clinton in 1994 \u2013 adjust and step center to meet the mood of the country, Williams says, \u201cit\u2019s Vegas, baby, and Obama is going to go all-in,\u201d Williams pooh-poohs the notion that Obama would say, \u201cwe tried too much, went too far and hey, we\u2019ll go back to the drawing board.\u201d<\/p>\n Hannity says, \u201cwhy not, a little humility might be a good thing.\u201d It\u2019s all very ironic, though; Williams seems to admire Obama for precisely<\/em> the same thing he disliked in George W. Bush<\/a>: the stubborn tenacity that will go \u201call-in\u201d rather than admit to an error as the public perceives it. And Hannity, in suggesting that Obama admit a mistake on healthcare, is echoing Williams\u2019 sentiments of about four years ago, that \u201cBush should just admit he made a mistake in Iraq; the American public will prefer that to continuing.\u201d<\/p>\n In which case, we can say that Barack Obama\u2019s healthcare plan is George W. Bush\u2019s pre-surge Iraq war. Take that any way you want. Democrats seem like they\u2019ve understood the message<\/a> more than the president has.<\/p>\n Second thought:<\/strong> I so rarely watch televised news that I forget how insulated these people are, who talk amongst themselves all day. Chris Matthews \u2013 after admitting to Marxist analysis<\/a> then to his credit, reverted to his sentimental-Irish mode tonight, wondering at the thing that makes America great \u2013 her electoral process. Rachel Maddow, in response, said, \u201c[Brown] ran a coherent campaign, but one totally divorced from reality.\u201d<\/p>\n Divorced from reality?<\/em><\/p>\n Oh. Okay, honey. Keep blaming Bush, too<\/a>, while Obama and the Democrats (who have controlled the economy since 2006) continue to tax and spend, with no discernible benefit to anyone\u2019s interest but their own.<\/p>\n Will the Dems delay seating Brown?<\/strong> They\u2019d be very foolish to try<\/a>. After all\u2026the whole world is watching, and the people shouting \u201cSeat him now\u201d and screaming against Obamacare in Massachusetts sound almost cathartic.<\/p>\n \u201cOur political leadership is uncomfortable with dissent\u2026\u201d<\/em> \u2013 big roar from the crowd.<\/p>\n \u201cYes we can!\u201d<\/em> Uh-oh. What does it mean when Brown\u2019s crowd appropriate\u2019s Obama\u2019s tag for themselves?<\/p>\n Major Garret notes<\/strong> on Twitter<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019m nobody\u2019s senator, but yours.\u201d Brown\u2019s coda. I still don\u2019t think I heard word \u201cRepublican.\u201d<\/em> Right. Just as Obama did not mention Obamacare while he was in MA, Brown is keeping his distance from the GOP -although he did give a shout out to McCain- this was not really a GOP victory.<\/p>\n Brown addresses<\/strong> \u201cthe people who wish to harm us\u2026we do not grant rights and privileges to enemies in wartime. Our tax dollars should go for weapons to defeat them, and not lawyers to defend them!\u201d<\/em> Is he signaling a future WH run?<\/p>\n When Brown said, \u201cI\u2019m nobody\u2019s senator but yours,\u201d<\/strong> I thought: he is a very clever guy<\/a> \u2013 he is alluding to an Irish song, \u201cNobody\u2019s Darling but Mine\u2026\u201d<\/em> and his Boston audience would have recognized that; you could tell by the roar that they appreciated it. Brown knows who he is talking to. \nI think Williams is right, and Obama will double down<\/strong>, because he\u2019s too stubborn not to. But I think Hannity is right, too; many Americans would like to see the drawing board re-emerge, and a healthcare bill written with the co-operation of both parties, and as transparently argued as Obama promised it would be, in the 2008 campaign. People want what they voted for; they don\u2019t like the bait-and-switch.<\/p>\n
