They keep using this word,<\/strong> \u201cunexpectedly\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nThe number of newly-laid off workers seeking jobless benefits unexpectedly<\/em><\/strong> rose last week, as the economy recovers at a slow and uneven pace.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Unexpectedly!<\/p>\n

Everything is \u201cunexpected\u201d with these people<\/a>, unless the President has an R after his name, at which point, no good economic news will go unpunished<\/a>, and no bad economic news will be \u201cunexpected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Layoffs have slowed and the economy began to grow in last year\u2019s third quarter, but companies are reluctant to hire new workers. The unemployment rate is 10 percent and many economists expect it to increase in the coming months.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That\u2019s \u201crecovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ohhhhkay.<\/p>\n

Ed Morrissey<\/strong> wonders if someone can find the press a new adverb<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Instapundit<\/strong> writes<\/a>: But how can it be \u201cunexpected\u201d if it\u2019s just due to an administrative backlog?<\/p>\n

I wonder what Chesterton would say<\/strong> about such unimaginative reportage, and such overused words?<\/p>\n

The curse of all journalism, but especially of that yellow journalism which is the shame of our profession, is that we think ourselves cleverer than the people for whom we write, whereas, in fact, we are generally even stupider. But this insolence has its Nemesis; and that Nemesis is well illustrated in this matter of reporting.<\/p>\n

For the journalist, having grown accustomed to talking down to the public, commonly talks too low at last, and becomes merely barbaric and unintelligible. By his very efforts to be obvious he becomes obscure.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then again, Chesterton did not put on airs.<\/p>\n

At the end of a lecture in America, an admirer of Gilbert Keith Chesterton, astonished by his vast knowledge, asked how he came to know so much. \u201cMadam\u201d, he replied, \u201cI know nothing. I am a journalist\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Meanwhile, here is something \u201cunexpected\u201d \u2013 at least to to Mort Zuckerman<\/a>, but here is the money quote<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\nHe\u2019s improved America\u2019s image in the world. He absolutely did. But you have to translate that into something. Let me tell you what a major leader said to me recently. \u201cWe are convinced,\u201d he said, \u201cthat he is not strong enough to confront his enemy. We are concerned,\u201d he said \u201cthat he is not strong to support his friends.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What? How incoherent is that? How can he have \u201cimproved America\u2019s image\u201d in the world -unless you mean on a very superficial and empty level- when the world is saying, essentially, \u201che\u2019s a weak and rather fickle horse.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m glad I don\u2019t live in Zuckerman\u2019s world ,where one must reconcile conflicting information, everyday, into something that both validates a narrative, and invalidates it, simultaneously.<\/p>\n
