{"id":21698,"date":"2010-09-15T15:06:28","date_gmt":"2010-09-15T19:06:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/blogs\/theanchoress\/?p=21698"},"modified":"2017-03-09T22:15:49","modified_gmt":"2017-03-09T22:15:49","slug":"a-creche-b-16-your-opinion-please","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/theanchoress\/2010\/09\/15\/a-creche-b-16-your-opinion-please\/","title":{"rendered":"A Creche, B-16 &amp; Your Opinion, Please"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><strong>I tease you with a splendid picture (they get a little fuzzy with cropping\/shrinking) from Rome<\/strong> in order to entice you into answering a question for me.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i4.photobucket.com\/albums\/y125\/TheAnchoress\/RomeCrecheChapelMaryMaggiore.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>What you see there is perhaps the most exquisite little chapel<\/strong> in Rome, in the great, mostly-5th century <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacred-destinations.com\/italy\/rome-santa-maria-maggiore\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Santa Maria Maggiore<\/a> (St. Mary Major).  The whole church is breathtaking (I am going to someday pattern my floors on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacred-destinations.com\/italy\/rome-santa-maria-maggiore-photos\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the swirly designs<\/a> therein), but this particular picture is of the Nativity chapel, designed by Arnolfo di Cambio.  The chapel includes the tombs of Pope Sixtus V, St. Jerome and the great Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and St. Ignatius of Loyola said his first mass at that altar, in the 1500\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i4.photobucket.com\/albums\/y125\/TheAnchoress\/RomeChapelMaggiorelace-1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>The statue of Pope Sixtus V, gazing in rapt adoration at the wood of the manger, is stunning; imagine sculpting lace out of marble! (I snuck a touch; it was cool and lacy).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i4.photobucket.com\/albums\/y125\/TheAnchoress\/RomeChapelMaggiorelace-2.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Observe the tassels surrounding the pillow<\/strong> upon which the pope rests his hands, and its pattern!  Doesn\u2019t it all look so soft, and touchable, as if you could run your finger along the fringe and watch it run in waves?  And the colorful inlaid marble that made up the walls, the stairways\u2013it brought a sense of joy, energy, hopefulness.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i4.photobucket.com\/albums\/y125\/TheAnchoress\/RomeMaggioreMarble.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>For a crypt, it was a very \u201calive\u201d place.  I wanted to linger, far too long.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now, here is my question:<\/strong> is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/catholicportal\/2010\/09\/08\/word-of-the-day-narthex\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Word of the Day<\/a> worth continuing?<\/p>\n<p>I ask because as nearly as I can tell, only three people read the thing, myself, one person on twitter, and another gal who likes to make puns off of my words, although I think I have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/catholicportal\/2010\/09\/15\/word-of-the-day-a-m-d-g\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">stumped her with this one<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, please let me know what you think.  Is it worth it scrounging up a new word every day, or should I let it go? But of course!<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Is there a second miracle<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnews.com\/data\/stories\/cns\/1003702.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">that can be attributed to the intercessory prayers<\/a> of John Henry Newman?  Sounds like!  Tony Blair writes on <a href=\"http:\/\/whispersintheloggia.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/pm-pope-and-newman.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the Pope and Newman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Very worth reading:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/blog\/the-cul?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+NCRegisterDailyBlog+%2540The+Daily+Register%2541#When:05:00:55Z\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">celebrating quiet heroes<\/a>.  And more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/catholicportal\/2010\/09\/13\/a-people-ahead-of-their-time-pt-2\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">grassroots appreciation here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Oh, St. Clare:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/church-indebted-to-courageous-women-teaches-holy-father\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+catholicnewsagency%2Fdailynews+%28CNA+Daily+News%29\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pope praises courageous women<\/a><br>\n<strong><br>\n5) John Allen on Benedict<\/strong>, stepping into <a href=\"http:\/\/ncronline.org\/news\/vatican\/benedict-step-buzz-saw-dissent-during-upcoming-uk-visit\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the buzzsaw of dissent<\/a> in the UK.  This pope is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/Resources\/Additional-Resources\/Fearless-How-John-Paul-II-Changed-The-Political-World.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">as fearless as the last<\/a>.
