Allahpundit is happy<\/a> with Christine O\u2019 Donnell\u2019s new campaign ad:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Writes Allah: <\/strong><\/p>\n

Not a syllable is breathed here about policy, party affiliation, or conservatism; it\u2019s a straightforward \u201ceveryman versus the establishment\u201d appeal which, thanks to O\u2019Donnell\u2019s poise and the direct, soft-spoken conversational appeal to the camera, ends up being quite arresting.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Well, I like the playful \u201cI\u2019m not a witch.\u201d<\/strong> and the \u201cI\u2019m nothing you\u2019ve heard.\u201d After that, I wanted to hear what she IS, and \u201cI\u2019m you\u201d didn\u2019t tell me that. In fact, forgive me, but when I heard \u201cI\u2019m you,\u201d all I could think of was Linda Tripp\u2019s disastrously-received \u201cI\u2019m you\u201d<\/em> statement during the Clinton\/Lewinsky debacle.<\/p>\n

Given her good looks, perhaps others will like \u201cI\u2019m you,\u201d but I also didn\u2019t love the droning, \u201cnone of us are perfect, but we all can agree\u2026\u201d No, it\u2019s not working for me.

The latest old chestnut retrieved by the media is something she said in a debate four years ago<\/a> about being privy to classified info regarding some sort of Chinese takeover of the U.S. I hope that doesn\u2019t swamp the rollout of the \u201cI\u2019m you\u201d message, but it bodes ill if the kook\/everyman arm-wrestling between the campaigns goes on until election day since it means she\u2019s on the defensive until the bitter end.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I happened to hear a newsreader on the radio report<\/strong> on this, this afternoon, her voice dripping<\/em> with mockery and disdain. Even though it was presented as a straight news story, the reporter did all she could to make the listener understand that O\u2019Donnell = nutcase.<\/em><\/p>\n

Then again, if Barack Obama had said something about being privvy to secret information like this four years ago, we\u2019d want to know about it, and we\u2019d want him to explain.<\/p>\n

The difference is, in that case, the press wouldn\u2019t tell us,<\/strong> and would call us \u201ccrazy\u201d for even daring to wonder about it.<\/p>\n

Which pretty much sums up why, as long as the mainstream media has control over the national conversation, things won\u2019t change much.<\/p>\n

They don\u2019t have the control they had even two years ago, but unfortunately, they still control too much.

\nMeanwhile, I suspect that there is going to be a steady drip, drip, drip<\/strong> of \u201coddball things Christine O\u2019 Donnell has said\u201d with the most damaging saved until two days before the election. It will get the Democrats hooting, and may scare plenty of indies, but tea party folk will close ranks around O\u2019 Donnell feeling protective about her.<\/p>\n

I sometimes think O\u2019 Donnell\u2019s fierce supporters are simply Palin fans who are trying to answer the savaging Palin took two years ago by sticking up for O\u2019Donnell, no matter what. But O\u2019 Donnell is not a strong candidate.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s a strong tea party<\/em> candidate. Whether that makes her strong enough, I dunno.<\/p>\n

This ad may be her roll-out<\/strong>, let\u2019s-put-the-witch-stuff-behind-us<\/em> effort, but I never thought the witch stuff mattered all that much. In fact, I believe her admitting to \u201chaving dabbled\u201d in occult things made her more, not less, relate-able to the general public.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m you, I used a Ouija board as a kid,\u201d works a whole lot better than, \u201cI\u2019m you; I felt privvy to secret information about China.\u201d<\/p>\n

UPDATE:<\/strong> My husband liked the ad. He thought it was fresh and endearing.<\/p>\n

UPDATE II:<\/strong> Jim Geraghty likes the ad a great deal<\/a>:<\/p>\n

You all know I\u2019m a Ruling Class RINO who thinks that if Christine O\u2019Donnell will stiff her former employees, she\u2019ll turn her back on anyone, right? So I\u2019m inclined to be very, very skeptical. I still think she\u2019s got to climb Everest and she\u2019s trying to do it without oxygen masks.<\/p>\n

But this is a great ad. Intensely personal, perhaps the only approach that could cut through the noise that has surrounded her bid since she stepped into the spotlight. There\u2019s almost a bit of vulnerability or awkwardness, and that almost becomes charming.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hmmm\u2026\u201dcharming\u201d is a word I\u2019ve seen several times<\/strong> in connection with that ad. I\u2019m rather immune to charm offenses, so perhaps that\u2019s what I\u2019m not picking up, and Allah, Jim and my husband may be right while I\u2019m wrong.<\/p>\n
