Deacon Greg Kandra<\/strong>\u2013who is due to move The Deacon\u2019s Bench<\/a> over to Patheos on December 13\u2013is busy hanging up bookshelves and making the place ready. As evidence of his excitement he\u2019s posted the greatest TV-Theme song ever written<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

An interesting background story on that memorable song. If you remember the series Good Times,<\/em> you may recall Ja\u2019net Dubois<\/a> being cast as Florida\u2019s friend and neighbor, Willona.<\/p>\n

What most don\u2019t realize is that Dubois, was an dis an accomplished musician and singer. When she learned that The Jeffersons<\/em> would be spinning off from All in the Family<\/em>, she asked producer Norman Lear if she could write the theme song.<\/p>\n

Lear was not interested and gave her a flat-out \u201cno.\u201d He had used known composers for other sitcom themes and wanted to stick with what he knew.<\/p>\n

The persistent Dubois nagged at him<\/strong>, again and again; finally, just to get her off his back, Lear agreed that she could at least submit<\/em> a theme for his consideration. She co-wrote \u201cMovin\u2019 On Up\u201d with composer Jeff Barry and then sang the theme herself, backed by a gospel choir.<\/p>\n

The rest, as they say, is history.<\/p>\n

And the lesson here<\/strong>\u2013it\u2019s the same one Churchill gave us: Never give up. Never, never, never give up.<\/em><\/p>\n
