Medical science is a wonderful thing, but it is not the only thing.<\/p>\n

And doctors understand many, many things, but not everything<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Which is why we should not be too quick to give up on people.<\/p>\n

Chase was also born prematurely, and he was legally blind. When he was 1 year old, doctors did an MRI, expecting to find he had a mild case of cerebral palsy. Instead, they discovered he was completely missing his cerebellum \u2014 the part of the brain that controls motor skills, balance and emotions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s when the doctor called and didn\u2019t know what to say to us,\u201d Britton said in a telephone interview. \u201cNo one had ever seen it before. And then we\u2019d go to the neurologists and they\u2019d say, \u2018That\u2019s impossible.\u2019 \u2018He has the MRI of a vegetable,\u2019 one of the doctors said to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chase is not a vegetable, leaving doctors bewildered and experts rethinking what they thought they knew about the human brain.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
