He\u2019ll see me looking pensive and ask \u201care you \u2018appy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a sweet question<\/strong>, and it always makes me smile, for the warm memories of my son at such a young age.  But sometimes I wonder if, rather than asking people if they\u2019re happy, we shouldn\u2019t ask them, \u201c<em>are you grateful?<\/em>\u201d  Because joy, or <em>\u2018appiness<\/em>, I am convinced, comes from a capacity to actually see the good things in one\u2019s life, and acknowledge them as good, and then be thankful.<\/p>\n<p>Gratitude that one is employed; gratitude that one can walk across a room, unassisted. Gratitude for the senses.  Gratitude for love, where we find it.<br>\n<em><br>\nAre you \u2018appy?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The question can be deceptive; it seems simple<\/strong>, but becomes complicated when one is forced to consider it, head-on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/7\/2011\/04\/inquiring-nuns-1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/7\/2011\/04\/inquiring-nuns-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"160\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26938\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In a very interesting look back at 1968<\/strong> (thanks to reader Debbie L!) two Catholic sisters (by their habits I would guess they are Adrian Dominicans) \u2014 Sister Marie Arn\u00e9 and Sister Mary Campion of St. Denis Parish in Chicago \u2014 participated in a documentary in which they were given a microphone and told to wade out into the crowds of Chicago to ask people (who, perhaps would feel less threatened by a nun with a mic) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kartemquin.com\/films\/inquiring-nuns\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>the simple\/complex question, <em>\u201cAre you happy?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Inquiring Nuns (1968) | Official Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T8qbTaoXrmc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Inquiring Nuns | &quot;Are you happy?&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1hl6fdtUYhk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p><strong>A good question. Are you happy?<\/strong> If you are, why? And if you are not, what might make you happy? And how much of what you are feeling \u2014 happy, or unhappy \u2014 is related to how aware you are of the blessings you have in your life.<\/p>\n<p>Or do you feel you have no blessings, at all?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coming at happiness from other perspectives,<\/strong> don\u2019t miss Marcia Morrissey writing on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/Resources\/Additional-Resources\/Walnuts-and-Rice-Prayer-in-Real-Life-Marcia-Morrissey-04-01-2011.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Walnuts and Rice<\/strong><\/a> and how they relate to your every day, and Joseph Susanka\u2019s look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/Resources\/Additional-Resources\/These-Pricking-Thorns-of-Guilt-Joseph-Susanka-04-01-2011.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>what guilt and death have in common<\/strong><\/a> and what makes us to rise, again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life can be hard, disappointing,<\/strong> full of struggles. But Abraham Lincoln supposedly said that most folks are \u201cas happy as they make up their minds to be\u201d and to an extent, I endorse that.<\/p>\n<p>A true awareness of the good things in your life however small, and a sincere gratitude for those good things \u2014 and the other awareness, of what you can and cannot change \u2014 it all plays into the happiness equation.
