The news is: <\/strong> fascinating<\/a>, troubling<\/a>, confoundingly<\/a> stupid<\/a>, entertaining<\/a>, amusing<\/a>, cautionary<\/a>, worrying<\/a>, dysfunctional<\/a>, encouraging<\/a>, discouraging<\/a>, predictable<\/a>, mind-boggling<\/a>, wholly engaging<\/a> and completely addictive and I would rather not pull myself away from it, but a deadline looms and I have to do it.

\nI\u2019d much, much rather be talking about<\/strong> how President Obama is going to put a lot of people out of work<\/a> and make life much more difficult for the auto industry and the oil industry by allowing state-by-state emissions regulations<\/a>, how his ideas for \u201cchildren\u2019s safety\u201d<\/a> will destroy<\/a> small cottage industries and larger businesses<\/a>. Not quite a stimulus, eh? I\u2019d rather be talking about how White House\/DNC Twittering<\/a> and White House\/You Tube data mining<\/a> are the sorts of things that \u2013 had George W. Bush tried them \u2013 would have had Olbermann, Matthews and the rest of the left<\/del> press screaming \u201cthis is fascism!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

But I have to work.<\/p>\n

Obama has not even been in office a week<\/strong> and I have gone from a cautious hopefulness that maybe, maybe things would look better to watching him do everything Jimmy Carter would have done and spout rhetoric that really makes me believe he might well be a socialist, after all.<\/p>\n

Someone asked me the other day what we can do? Well, we can write to feckless, cowardly representatives, but mostly, we can resist any moves to take away free speech \u2013 in any form \u2013 because as long as we can speak freely, we still have some power as a people. And then\u2026pray<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Lent is coming. It\u2019s a time of penance and prayer \u2013 not Frank Richian penance<\/a> (scroll down to the updates for it) but real<\/em> penance. Prayer changes things. So does introspection, admission of wrongdoing, contrition and penance; those things enhance and fortify resolve and bring grace, which does astonishing things.<\/p>\n
