I\u2019m a fan of Miley Cyrus.\u00a0 I think it started with that 3D concert I saw back when my youngest was a tween.\u00a0 The woman can really sing.\u00a0 Later I happened upon her advocacy for gay marriage<\/a> and that made me like her more.\u00a0 Yesterday she got even gutsier<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old pop star and actress recently came under fire<\/a> for tweeting the word \u201cBeautiful\u201d<\/a> and a photo of theoretical physicist Laurence Krauss, with the quote: \u201cYou are all stardust. You couldn\u2019t be here if stars hadn\u2019t exploded\u2026 So forget Jesus. Stars died so you could live.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cyrus\u2019 haters and fans alike became enraged and wondered if the singer has given up her Christian faith, with some even telling her to go to hell.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think she\u2019s given up her Christianity, but no one could blame her for questioning it in the wake of some of the horrible things that Christians wrote to her.<\/p>\n

This was all the more interesting to me when I recalled a profile abut her estranged father last year in \u201cGQ\u201d where he shared some insight on his religious faith<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cSomewhere along this journey,\u201d he says, \u201cboth mine and Miley\u2019s faith has been shaken. That saddens me the most.\u201d When they first came to Hollywood for Hannah Montana, the two of them would drive down the freeway together to the studio each morning, and every day Miley would point out the sign that said<\/p>\n

Just before moving out to Los Angeles, the whole family had been baptized together by their pastor at the People\u2019s Church in Franklin, Tennessee. \u201cIt was Tish\u2019s idea,\u201d he remembers. \u201cShe said, \u2018We\u2019re going to be under attack, and we have to be strong in our faith and we\u2019re all going to be baptized\u2026'\u201d And there, driving to work each day in the City of Angels, was this sign. \u201cA physical sign. It could have easily said \u2018You will now be attacked by Satan.\u2019 \u2018Entering this industry, you are now on the highway to darkness\u2026'\u201d<\/p>\n

Do you really see it in such clearly spiritual terms\u2014that your family was under attack by Satan?<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we are right now. No doubt. There\u2019s no doubt about it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s nice to see that Miley has survived her father\u2019s narrowmindedness.\u00a0 I hope it\u2019s an inspiration to her fans.\u00a0 I will continue to count myself among them.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
