I wish that I did not have to post things like this.\u00a0 I\u2019ve already written about my objections to circumcision.\u00a0 It\u2019s non-consensual, risky and irreversible.\u00a0 But there\u2019s circumcision and there\u2019s circumcision and the kind of \u201cb\u2019rit milah\u201d that is conducted with the tradition of \u201cmetzizah b\u2019peh,\u201d sucking the blood out direcly by mouth, carries risks beyond any other.<\/p>\n

And once again, it\u2019s resulted in the death of an infant<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The unidentified infant died Sept. 28, 2011, at Maimonides Hospital, according to a spokeswoman for the city Medical Examiner, who confirmed the death after a News inquiry<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The cause of death was listed as \u201cdisseminated herpes simplex virus Type 1, complicating ritual circumcision with oral suction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayor Bloomberg Tuesday defended that finding.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doctors who found this are objective and independent scientists who don\u2019t answer to anyone, including whoever is Mayor,\u201d he told reporters at an unrelated event in The Bronx.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is a version of ritual circumcision that is practiced by some Haredi Jews despite there being ways to do it indirectly so no bodily fluids flow back.<\/p>\n

I understand that banning circumcision may be a bridge too far right now, but this practice must cease.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
