If you have not had the opportunity to watch the YouTube video in the previous post, now would be a good time.\u00a0 Tonight, in a tribute to sanity, several thousand protestors arrived \u2013 on one day\u2019s notice \u2013 for a rally in Beit Shemesh.\u00a0 Secular and religious Jews, including a few moderate Haredim, joined together to express their outrage.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s terrific and I\u2019m the first to applaud this demonstration of sensibility.\u00a0 But before we start celebrating the end of Haredi misogyny, let\u2019s remember that negativity about women \u2013 if not the violence \u2013 is widespread in Haredi Judaism.<\/p>\n

In yesterday\u2019s \u201cJudaism\u201d section of ynet, Nehemia Rosenfeld had a great piece with a few examples of how Haredi Jews are educated and acculturated.\u00a0 The full article is available only in Hebrew,<\/a> but here are some highlights:<\/p>\n

The newspaper \u201cHaModia\u201d brands itself as \u201cthe daily newspaper of Haredi Judaism,\u201d and it is indeed the most widespread paper in that sector.\u00a0 The newspaper belongs to the Agudat Yisrael faction which is part of the Torah Judaism Party [and sits in the government coalition].\u00a0 Many in the Haredi public view \u201cHaModia\u201d as the organ of the Gur Hasidim and the newspaper makes no effort to conceal this.<\/p>\n

Now no one would think to call MK Yaakov Litzman \u2013 the Gur Hasidic representative in Agudat Yisrael \u2013 a radical.\u00a0 [He is Israel\u2019s Deputy Minister of Health, but is actually the acting minister, choosing the \u201cdeputy\u201d title to minimize the appearance of being Zionist.]\u00a0 And moreover, no one would ever call the Gur Hasidim, one of the largest and most dominant Hasidic groups in Israel, a marginal group or a minority voice.<\/p>\n

And yet, as anyone who\u2019s ever thumbed through \u201cHaModia\u201d knows too well, women\u2019s pictures are forbidden in its pages.\u00a0 In the past they have edited out pictures of female politicians even in large group photos of the government.\u00a0 There are also other very bizarre editorial decisions made by this most \u201cmainstream\u201d of Haredi newspapers and Rosenfeld reproduces them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

You will laugh, but try not to laugh too hard.\u00a0 As funny as these are, they represent something very ugly and very dangerous.\u00a0 Just ask poor little Na\u2019ama Margolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
