I accidentally ran into this strange advertisement from the Israeli Department of Immigration and Absorption.\u00a0 It\u2019s meant to encourage Israelis to return to Israel.\u00a0 The tagline of the campaign is \u201cThey\u2019ll always remain Israelis, but what about their children?\u201d \u00a0This piece is titled \u201cBefore Chanukah turns into Christmas\u2026it\u2019s time to return to Israel.\u201d\u00a0 Even if you don\u2019t speak Hebrew, you\u2019ll get the gist:<\/p>\n

Now I\u2019m all in favor of encouraging Jews, whether Israelis or others, to consider making aliya.\u00a0 I once aspired to live in Israel myself.\u00a0 But this is ridiculous.<\/p>\n
Obviously these are supposed to be Israelis living here.\u00a0 The last I noticed we had a pretty vibrant Jewish community with several million Jews.\u00a0 Part of my job involves working with our JCC\u2019s Jewish preschool.\u00a0 The Jewish kids, and most especially the ones who speak fluent Hebrew (!), certainly celebrate Chanukah.<\/p>\n
