It&#8217;s All Part Of God&#8217;s Plan For You"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Another survey about religiosity in America has been released by Baylor University, a Baptist institution in Waco, Texas.\u00a0 As Christian universities go, it\u2019s always had a halfway decent reputation in some areas.\u00a0 I won\u2019t go into the details of the research, which you can see at their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baylor.edu\/newsclips\/index.php?id=85125\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">site<\/a>.\u00a0 However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2011\/09\/20\/unemployment-religion-baylor-survey_n_970772.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jaweed Kaleem, writing on HuffPost<\/a>, took a look at what the study reveals about the relationship between fundamentalism and attitudes toward the unemployment situation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026Americans who believe God has a plan for their lives are more likely to think the government \u201cdoes too much,\u201d more likely to oppose unemployment benefits for healthy people and more likely to believe in the \u201cAmerican dream\u201d that anything is possible for those who work hard.<!--more--><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interestingly, the study also revealed that those who held such beliefs made less money than strong disbelievers.\u00a0 And that they tended to be less educated than disbelievers.\u00a0 That last finding isn\u2019t a surprise.<\/p>\n<p>I have long wondered about how it is possible that so many fundamentalists defy the supposedly compassionate teachings of their religion.\u00a0 These findings go a way toward explaining just how wrong it is to assume that they\u2019re learning about compassion from their faith.\u00a0 As far as they\u2019re concerned, God loves them more than those unemployed slobs.\u00a0 And if, by chance, they should find themselves in that sad situation, then they accept it as God\u2019s plan for them.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow the Republican Party has been able to exploit this weakness in the faith of so many under-educated fundamentalists.\u00a0 Rich Republican corporate interests throw religious raw meat at these folks who, no matter how they are screwed over by Wall Street, will attribute anything that comes at them as \u201cGod\u2019s plan.\u201d\u00a0 Of course, Dems also play footsie with the corporate interests, but they don\u2019t generally play the religion card.\u00a0 Republicans have cornered the market on that particular tactic.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another survey about religiosity in America has been released by Baylor University, a Baptist institution in Waco, Texas.\u00a0 As Christian universities go, it\u2019s always had a halfway decent reputation in some areas.\u00a0 I won\u2019t go into the details of the research, which you can see at their site.\u00a0 However, Jaweed Kaleem, writing on HuffPost, took [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2281,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[12,33],"class_list":["post-457","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blogentries","tag-fundamentalist-christianity","tag-politics"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Unemployed?
