{"id":507,"date":"2011-03-23T19:18:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-23T19:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/theatheistrabbi\/2011\/03\/twin-religious-fanatics-of-different-mothers.html"},"modified":"2011-03-23T19:18:00","modified_gmt":"2011-03-23T19:18:00","slug":"twin-religious-fanatics-of-different-mothers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/theatheistrabbi\/2011\/03\/twin-religious-fanatics-of-different-mothers.html","title":{"rendered":"Twin Religious Fanatics Of Different Mothers"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Lately I have been spending a lot of time thinking about the relationship between conservative Christians and their Islamic counterparts.\u00a0 These days (especially in the decade since 9\/11) conservative Christians have been involved in a non-stop assault on Islam.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s manifested itself in the opposition to building mosques (not just in Lower Manhattan) and banning Sharia law.\u00a0 Imaginative Christians have even managed to create the impression that there is some kind of destructive cabal consisting of liberals, Muslims, secular humanists and gays.\u00a0 Though the idea of conservative Muslims embracing gays, liberals or secular humanists is ludicrous, Christians have been running with this meme.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Of course what\u2019s really going on here is that conservative Christians fear a Muslim takeover (that will never happen) for strictly theological reasons.\u00a0 After all, the main points of disagreement between the two are all based on whose fairy tale is authoritative.\u00a0 (Jesus\u2026savior of humanity or just a prophet?)\u00a0 Otherwise, on reproductive choice, feminism, gay rights, freedom from religion and the like, they are \u2013 unsurprisingly \u2013 in sync with each other.<\/p>\n<p>The patently ridiculous idea of linking secular humanists to Islamic radicals illustrates the risible lack of self-awareness of these right wing Christians.\u00a0 In a post at <a href=\"http:\/\/livepage.apple.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Religious Dispatches, Sarah Posner<\/a> has done a good job of illustrating this, at least when it comes to one Sally Kern, an Oklahoma politician:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Kern is a dyed-in-the-wool Christian nation enthusiast who believes God called her to run for public office. Her husband, a Baptist preacher, is a member of 2008 Constitution Party presidential candidate Chuck Baldwin\u2019s Black Regiment of pastors who seek to take back America from federal government \u201ctyranny.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religiondispatches.org\/dispatches\/sarahposner\/3264\/no_henpecked_men_here%3A_the_black-robed_regiment_before_beck\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Membership requirements<\/a>: candidates must be male, must be \u201cthe head of his own home, having his wife and children in subjection to his authority. No henpecked men here.\u201d That\u2019s more than a tad ironic, given that the anti-shari\u2019ah crusaders are all in a tizzy over their claim that shari\u2019ah law subjugates women.<\/p>\n<p>Kern made national headlines in 2008 after she asserted that homosexuality is more dangerous to America than \u201cterrorism or Islam.\u201d The following year, she came out with her \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/06\/30\/kern-proclamation-morality\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Oklahoma Citizen\u2019s Proclamation for Morality<\/a>,\u201d which blamed the country\u2019s \u201ceconomic woes\u201d on \u201cabortion, pornography, same sex marriage, sex trafficking, divorce, illegitimate births, child abuse, and many other forms of debauchery.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Secular humanists bear an enormous responsibility here to cry \u201cfoul\u201d on both of these movements. Except for externalities and meaningless (at least to us) theological differences, they are both threats to creating a rational future for humanity.\u00a0 Each advocates a return to medieval theocracy, so long as it\u2019s THEIR theocracy.<\/p>\n<p>When Jews wanted to be associated with the majority, many happily accepted the notion of America as a \u201cJudeo-Christian\u201d nation.\u00a0 I say it\u2019s time to turn that on its head and come up with a term to describe this menace.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s call it Christo-Islamic Fascism.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lately I have been spending a lot of time thinking about the relationship between conservative Christians and their Islamic counterparts.\u00a0 These days (especially in the decade since 9\/11) conservative Christians have been involved in a non-stop assault on Islam.
