{"id":512,"date":"2011-03-16T20:08:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-16T20:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/theatheistrabbi\/2011\/03\/newt-hearts-hagee.html"},"modified":"2011-03-16T20:08:00","modified_gmt":"2011-03-16T20:08:00","slug":"newt-hearts-hagee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/theatheistrabbi\/2011\/03\/newt-hearts-hagee.html","title":{"rendered":"Newt Hearts Hagee"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>I must admit that the thought of certain Republicans running for president makes me a bit giddy.\u00a0 Sarah Palin\u2019s run would be entertaining, of course.\u00a0\u00a0Michelle Bachman could also be a hoot. \u00a0But the one I\u2019m really looking forward to is Newt Gingrich.<\/p>\n<p>Newt seems to be getting serious about it.\u00a0 He\u2019s a spankin\u2019 fresh new Catholic and all his (many, many, but who\u2019s counting?) sins are supposedly behind him.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But are they? \u00a0He\u2019s already made some outrageously stoopid self-defensive statements.\u00a0 The best of these came when he blamed his various affairs on his (sniff, sniff) love for our country.\u00a0 You\u2019ve probably already heard how <a href=\"http:\/\/politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com\/2011\/03\/15\/gingrich-responds-to-criticism-on-affairs\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">he told CNN<\/a> that his dalliances were \u201cpartially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wow!\u00a0 How\u2019s he going to beat that one?\u00a0 Well, he could start by meeting one of the most vile, yet influential (!) evangelical leaders in the country.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/motherjones.com\/politics\/2011\/03\/newt-gingrich-john-hagee\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Perhaps it could be someone whom even found John McCain found unacceptable?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) accepted the endorsement of Texas megachurch pastor John Hagee in 2008, the result was a PR disaster. After critics pointed to Hagee\u2019s incendiary views on gays (whom he <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2008\/04\/23\/hagee-katrina-mccain\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">held responsible<\/a> for Hurricane Katrina) and Catholicism (which he described as a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/campaign-2008\/articles\/2008\/03\/12\/mccain-is-fighting-to-win-the-catholic-vote\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">false cult<\/a>\u201c), the Arizona Republican called Hagee\u2019s views \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/7416257.stm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">crazy and unacceptable<\/a>\u201d and renounced the endorsement.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it\u2019s our old friend John Hagee!\u00a0 He\u2019s been forgiven by the cretinous Bill Donohue.\u00a0 His comments about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharethetruth.tv\/v\/1119,hagee-'hitler-was-fulfilling-god's-will-for-israel'.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hitler fulfilling the God\u2019s word<\/a> were pardoned by his new besties, right-wing (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/theatheistrabbi\/2011\/02\/how-to-kill-liberal-american-zionism.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">or willfully ignorant<\/a>) Jews.<\/p>\n<p>This association won\u2019t hurt Newt at all.\u00a0 It only caused a problem for McCain because everyone thought that he was above those kinds of associations (which he clearly never was).<\/p>\n<p>It certainly won\u2019t cause any troubles with his fellow Catholics (wouldn\u2019t Hagee usually call them papists?) or with Republican Jews.\u00a0 But the real reason Newt is going to bed with Hagee is that the more old time religion he can associate with, the more he thinks everyone will just forget about his patriotic affairs and his unbelievable hypocrisy.\u00a0\u00a0Of the latter\u00a0I\u2019m sure there\u2019s a Clinton somewhere who will remind him.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican primaries are going to be a lot of fun!<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I must admit that the thought of certain Republicans running for president makes me a bit giddy.\u00a0 Sarah Palin\u2019s run would be entertaining, of course.\u00a0\u00a0Michelle Bachman could also be a hoot. \u00a0But the one I\u2019m really looking forward to is Newt Gingrich.
