{"id":595,"date":"2010-12-22T20:04:00","date_gmt":"2010-12-22T20:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/theatheistrabbi\/2010\/12\/more-dadt-nonsense.html"},"modified":"2010-12-22T20:04:00","modified_gmt":"2010-12-22T20:04:00","slug":"more-dadt-nonsense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/theatheistrabbi\/2010\/12\/more-dadt-nonsense.html","title":{"rendered":"More DADT Nonsense"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>One of our least favorite neighbors down here in South Florida is the Coral Ridge Ministries.\u00a0 Robert Knight is described as the \u201csenior writer\u201d for the church.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have a clue what that means, but his writing did appear in Monday\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2010\/dec\/20\/a-new-meaning-for-brothers-in-arms\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">washingtontimes.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His main beef in the column is that opponents of DADT didn\u2019t address the \u201csuppressed facts that could cripple the homosexual juggernaut if Americans only knew.\u201d\u00a0 Then he goes on to make a whole bunch of assertions.\u00a0 Some of these deserve to be addressed.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>He writes, \u201cAll major religions teach\u2026the immorality of homosexuality.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, only fundamentalist religions, the kind that pose a threat to the peace of the world, teach the \u201cimmorality of homosexuality.\u201d\u00a0 Most <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LGBT-affirming_denominations_in_Judaism\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jews<\/a> and an increasing number of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LGBT-affirming_Christian_denominations\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christians<\/a> teach no such thing.\u00a0 Hating gays is actually something that Robert Knight has in common with with most Muslims, a group that he and his ilk also hate.\u00a0\u00a0He should feel so proud.<\/p>\n<p>He asserts that the repeal ignores \u201cthousands of years of moral teaching about human sexuality.\u201d\u00a0 Let\u2019s look at some of those teachings:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Genesis 12:\u00a0 Abraham passes his wife off as his sister, allows Pharaoh to have his way with her and, as a result, gets wealthy.\u00a0 His son, Isaac, repeats this charade in Genesis 26.<\/p>\n<p>Genesis 16:\u00a0 Sarah forces her handmaiden on Abraham so he can get her pregnant.\u00a0 Later, when Sarah has her own child, she banishes the handmaiden and her son.<\/p>\n<p>Genesis 19:\u00a0 Lot, who is called \u201cjust\u201d and \u201crighteous\u201d in the New Testament, offers his daughters to a crowd of rapists.\u00a0 Later on Lot\u2019s daughters screw their father so they can get pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>Various:\u00a0 Nearly every major character has concubines and\/or multiple wives.<\/p>\n<p>Genesis 38:\u00a0 Judah sleeps with some random chick and has two kids with her.\u00a0 Then he sleeps with a prostitute, unaware that it\u2019s his daughter-in-law, and knocks her up.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And this is only Genesis.\u00a0 Lest you say that these are not \u201cteachings,\u201d here\u2019s some more:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Exodus 21:\u00a0 You can sell your daughter permanently into sexual slavery.\u00a0 If her master doesn\u2019t like her anymore, he can give her to some random foreign nation, but she can\u2019t go free.<\/p>\n<p>Exodus 21:\u00a0 You can have more than one wife and here\u2019s how!<\/p>\n<p>Exodus 22:\u00a0 If you get the hankering, you can go rape a virgin, but then you\u2019ve got to marry her!\u00a0 (Unless your new father-in-law doesn\u2019t approve \u2013 but why wouldn\u2019t he? \u2013 then your only punishment is to pay the bride price.)<\/p>\n<p>Numbers 31:\u00a0 After defeating the Midianites, the soldiers let the children and women live.\u00a0 God gets angry and tells them that he ordered all but the virgin girls killed.\u00a0 They\u2019re then told to finish off everyone else but to keep the virgins for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Deuteronomy 21:\u00a0 If you take a woman captive and you want to have sex with her, then go right ahead.\u00a0 If you decide later that you don\u2019t want her then you can just send her away.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, I think you get the idea about the thousands of years of moral teachings.\u00a0 And we only got to Deuteronomy.<\/p>\n<p>The last idiocy he presents is how \u201cJohn Adams, the father of the American Navy, stressed the irreplaceable element of moral character.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s pretty gutsy considering what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.positiveatheism.org\/hist\/quotes\/adams.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Adams really believed<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I almost shudder at the thought of alluding to the most fatal example of the abuses of grief which the history of mankind has preserved \u2014 the Cross. Consider what calamities that engine of grief has produced!<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Adams, letter to Thomas Jefferson, from George Seldes, The Great Quotations, also from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvinter.net\/~haught\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">James A Haught<\/a>, ed, 2000 Years of Disbelief<\/p>\n<p>God is an essence that we know nothing of.
