In the wake of the bullying that led to the spate of teen suicides, many schools have sponsored weeks dedicated to tolerance.\u00a0 One of them, in suburban Chicago, evinced this response<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Three students Monday wore shirts to school with the words \u201cStraight Pride\u201d on the front and the back quoted one translation of a Biblical verse that calls homosexuality an \u201cabomination\u201d and says those who perform homosexual acts shall be \u201cput to death.\u201d The students wore the shirts during the first day of Ally Week.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019m waiting to see how long it will take before they are invited to speak to evangelical churches about their brave stance in bringing biblical morality back to our schools.\u00a0 One of the students, clearly all hopped up on biblical values, had this to say about negative reaction to his shirt:<\/p>\n

\u201cI was shocked,\u201d [senior Jack] Pezzuto said. \u201cThere is clearly a double standard here, and we\u2019re really upset about this. They said the reason we can\u2019t wear \u2018Straight Pride\u2019 shirts is because they are disruptive. And I can understand how maybe some people were intimidated by the shirts with the Bible verse. But I don\u2019t understand how some students are able to wear \u2018Gay Pride\u2019 shirts while we can\u2019t wear shirts that just say \u2018Straight Pride.\u2019 We wanted to wear them because we wanted to raise the fact that we were getting ripped on for supporting our straight sexuality, and also as a way to prove that our school has double standards.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

See, kid, it\u2019s this way.\u00a0 No one has shamed, bullied or threatened you with Yahweh\u2019s divine judgment for being straight.\u00a0 Gay pride is a reaction to that kind of treatment.\u00a0 What you\u2019re doing is no different than wearing \u201cWhite Pride\u201d shirts.<\/p>\n

I view this as just another example of \u201cChristian Persecution Complex,\u201d the phenomenon whereby fundamentalists imagine that they are actually some kind of persecuted minority.\u00a0 This is because they are being increasingly prevented from forcing the rest of us to put up with being bossed around by them.\u00a0 And now they can\u2019t pick on gay kids as much or, you know, threaten them with biblically sanctioned death.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
