One-third (33%) of the public also believe that messages from religious bodies are contributing \u201ca lot\u201d to higher rates of suicide among gay and lesbian youth, and another third (32%) say these message contribute \u201ca little;\u201d only 21% say they do not contribute at all.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>\u201cThe survey shows that a significant number of Americans are aware of and concerned about the negative impact of messages about homosexuality from places of worship, particularly with regard to gay and lesbian youth,\u201d said Dr. Robert P. Jones, CEO of Public Religion Research Institute.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>Responses from religious leaders and communities have ranged from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rmnetwork.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">heartening<\/a> to the odious.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>Not surprisingly, the most <a href=\"http:\/\/onfaith.washingtonpost.com\/onfaith\/guestvoices\/2010\/10\/christian_compassion_requires_the_truth_about_harms_of_homosexuality.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>repulsive came from Tony Perkins<\/span><\/a> of the Family Research Council in a column published by the <i>Washington Post<\/i> on National Coming Out Day:\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>Some homosexuals may recognize intuitively that their same-sex attractions are abnormal\u2013yet they have been told by the homosexual movement, and their allies in the media and the educational establishment, that they are \u201cborn gay\u201d and can never change. This\u2013and not society\u2019s disapproval\u2013may create a sense of despair that can lead to suicide.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>Of course, it\u2019s the gays\u2019 fault!\u00a0 We tell them that they\u2019re okay and we\u2019re lying to them because we\u2019re such depraved sinners.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, \u201cflagship school of the Southern Baptist Convention,\u201d is just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albertmohler.com\/2010\/10\/04\/between-the-boy-and-the-bridge-a-haunting-question\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%253A+AlbertMohlersBlog+%2528Albert+Mohler%2527s+Blog%2529&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>so darn upset about these suicides<\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>\u2026[W]hen gay activists accuse conservative Christians of homophobia, they are also right. Much of our response to homosexuality is rooted in ignorance and fear. We speak of homosexuals as a particular class of especially depraved sinners and we lie about how homosexuals experience their own struggle.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>He even demonstrates a clear understanding of the problem:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>The homosexual community will argue that these boys were oppressed by the fact that so many believe that homosexuality is sinful. They respond with calls for the acceptance and normalization of homosexuality. Their logic is easy to understand. If the stigma attached to homosexuality were to disappear, persons who are convinced that they are homosexual in sexual orientation, along with those who are confused, would be free from bullying, the threat of exposure, and injury to their parents and loved ones.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>But what can he do?\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t like the homophobia, but that doesn\u2019t change what God wants:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>Of course, Christians committed to biblical truth will recognize this as a demand to lie to sinners about their sin.
