{"id":698,"date":"2010-10-02T20:36:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-02T20:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/theatheistrabbi\/2010\/10\/maybe-he-works-at-yale-community-college.html"},"modified":"2010-10-02T20:36:00","modified_gmt":"2010-10-02T20:36:00","slug":"maybe-he-works-at-yale-community-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/theatheistrabbi\/2010\/10\/maybe-he-works-at-yale-community-college.html","title":{"rendered":"Maybe He Works At Yale Community College"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div><span>Rabbi Shmully Hecht is the advisor to the Chabad-sponsored Yale <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eliezer_Society\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Eliezer Society<\/a>.\u00a0 He is also a blogger at the Washington Post\u2019s On Faith site where <a href=\"http:\/\/onfaith.washingtonpost.com\/onfaith\/panelists\/shmully_hecht\/2010\/09\/atheism_and_ignorance.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>he wrote<\/span><\/a> about the criticism that was supposedly leveled at Israel for missing the president\u2019s UN speech because it was the first day of Sukkot.\u00a0 Hecht doesn\u2019t bother to properly cite or link to any of this flood of criticism, except for Jon Stewart:\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>The Daily Show host Jon Stewart (born Jonathan Leibowitz) recently revealed to great laughs that the actual meaning of Sukkot is \u201chow many holidays can Jews fit into one month.\u201d\u00a0 While a comedian, Stewart\u2019s words are often accorded journalistic integrity.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>Apparently, Hecht is one of those gifted writers who puts his little jibes in parentheses.\u00a0 See, Jon Stewart\u2019s real last name is Leibowitz.\u00a0 Get it?!\u00a0 He\u2019s Jewish!\u00a0 He\u2019s a bad Jew hiding his Jewishness?!\u00a0 Do you get it?!\u00a0 Do you?!<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>I guess he doesn\u2019t watch The Daily Show very often.\u00a0 Stewart hardly conceals the fact that he\u2019s Jewish.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>The point of Hecht\u2019s article is that Sukkot is a really important holiday and Jon Stewart is woefully ignorant of that.\u00a0 He contrasts Stewart to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=Gnu%20Atheist\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">gnu atheists<\/a>:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>To be fair\u2026Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris (both of Jewish descent) present in fact quite the opposite of Jon Stewarts antics, indeed taking their studies of G\u2011d very seriously.\u00a0 \u2026Atheists make a case against G\u2011d (though surely would find it a bit odd to argue that the fully assembled car in their driveway had no designer).<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>I have four things to say about this.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>First of all, I don\u2019t know if Jon Stewart is an atheist or not and I don\u2019t see what that has to do with his hysterical bit about Jewish holidays.\u00a0 Second, who cares if Hitchens or Harris are of Jewish descent?
