It\u2019s a lovely tome.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a summation:<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cThe prohibition (in the Ten Commandments) \u2018Thou shalt not murder,\u201d the authors write, \u201capplies only to a Jew who kills a Jew.\u201d Since \u201cnon-Jews are uncompassionate by nature,\u201d they should be killed in order to \u201ccurb their evil inclinations,\u201d they write.\n

\u201cThere is justification for killing babies if it is clear that they will grow up to harm us, and in such a situation they may be harmed deliberately, and not only during combat with adults.\u201d<\/p><\/span><\/div>\n

The article is about the arrest and release of the authors, their influence on religious soldiers, and the views of their many detractors and perhaps fewer supporters.<\/span><\/div>\n
One of their supporters is Rabbi Yaakov Yosef, \u201cleader of the Hazon Yaakov Yeshiva in Jerusalem, a former member of Knesset and son of former chief rabbi Ovadia Yosef, spiritual leader of the Shas party.\u201d\u00a0 From the article:<\/span>\n<\/div>\n
\u2026Yosef\u2026declared that \u201cTorat Hamelekh\u201d [sic] is no different from the Haggada, which Jews read on the holiday of Passover. The Haggada, he reminded the audience, calls for God to \u201cpour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know You and on the kingdoms that do not call upon Your name\u201d and contains passages about killing non-Jews. So does the Bible. \u201cDoes anyone want to change the Bible?\u201d he challenged.<\/span><\/div>\n

For those of you who do not understand how a rabbi can reject the so-called sanctity of the bible, please bookmark this comment.\u00a0 Clearly I don\u2019t think for one moment that any liberal or even most Orthodox rabbis agree with Yosef\u2019s interpretation.\u00a0 But most of them are going to read that Haggada passage on Passover.\u00a0 It\u2019s a famous passage.\u00a0 There are at least seven variations on it in throughout the bible. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

There are scores of biblical passages with equal or greater moral repugnance.\u00a0 Actually, there are also scores of biblical passages that are even worse than what those rabbis wrote.\u00a0 This should not be unexpected in Iron or Bronze Age literature.\u00a0 It\u2019s very\u00a0 disturbing when it comes from 21st century religious leaders.<\/span><\/div>\n
