\u2026 Here\u2019s my take away from last week\u2019s discussion on Confession on Demand<\/a> \u2014 we need more access to the sacrament. Period. <\/p>\n

When did one hour a week per parish become the norm anyway? <\/p>\n

If your parish is tiny than I suppose this would suffice, but I\u2019ve been to huge parishes with thousands of families and still the congregation is offered one hour a week. My own parish offers confession twice weekly; however, that is not typical of the diocese. <\/p>\n

Obviously we need more priests. Also obvious, we need our current priests to place performing sacraments in priority over administrative duties. <\/p>\n

As my seminarian friend stated, \u201cwe are getting ordained to perform the sacraments, not attend meetings.\u201d Most comments seem to agree being busy was not a valid excuse, this coming from other priests. <\/p>\n

So perhaps Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry\u2019s advice<\/a> wasn\u2019t all that bad. In fact, I will contend it was probably very good advice. <\/p>\n

Go into a church at random.
\nFind a priest.
\nTell the priest you need a confession now. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As Fr John Corrigan noted, <\/p>\n

Maybe if a priest who only schedules the token half hour each week was inundated by good confessions on demand, he might learn to value the sacrament more and minister it with greater generosity and zeal. Think about that next time the Holy Spirit prompts you to \u201ccold-call.\u201d It might be part of a larger plan!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Confession is vital. Something so vital needs to be accessible. How can we do this?<\/p>\n

What can the laity do to help priests better manage their time? Can they assume more administrative duties and volunteer more?<\/p>\n

Are we as parents instilling in our children the need for frequent confession \u2013 through daily examinations of conscience and contrition<\/a> and taking them to confession even if they don\u2019t need to just so they can witness you going? <\/p>\n

Do we pray for an increase in vocations and encourage our seminarians?<\/p>\n

Mostly\u2026 do we go to confession with regularity?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We can tell priest \u201cmore confession, please\u201d but he\u2019s probably not going to be quick at accommodating us if we don\u2019t make frequent<\/em> use of the sacrament. <\/p>\n

Remind the priest why he\u2019s in that box \u2014 to save souls. <\/p>\n
