{"id":18642,"date":"2015-05-17T22:17:55","date_gmt":"2015-05-18T02:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/thecrescat\/?p=18642"},"modified":"2015-05-17T22:17:55","modified_gmt":"2015-05-18T02:17:55","slug":"finding-the-inner-and-outer-strength-to-keep-moving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/thecrescat\/2015\/05\/finding-the-inner-and-outer-strength-to-keep-moving.html","title":{"rendered":"Finding the Inner and Outer Strength to Keep Moving&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u2026 When you\u2019ve been stuck in traffic for over an hour and just don\u2019t feel like cooking and everyone\u2019s complaining that they\u2019re hungry, you hear the siren song of delivery pizza. <\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019ve been going nonstop since you woke up at the crack of dawn and you don\u2019t stop till the end of the day and you can\u2019t bear the thought of dragging out the resistance bands and exercise mat.  <\/p>\n<p>When you have a million reasons to take short cuts in the kitchen or skip the work out altogether, that\u2019s when you need to focus on what your goals are. <\/p>\n<p>Why are you doing this? To lose weight? To get strong? Better health? Are you training for a 5K? <\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019ve been sedentary for as long as I have getting up and moving isn\u2019t something that comes natural. Sitting at my desk 8 hours a day and sitting on my couch are what\u2019s natural for me. Breaking that habit takes effort, determination, and motivation. <\/p>\n<p>Finding what motivates you is key. These are the things you want so badly they have the power to lift you off the couch and change your eating habits. <\/p>\n<p>The things that motivate me are all the things I want to do with better health and a better body. <\/p>\n<p>\u2013 reduce back pain<br>\n\u2013 reduce migraines<br>\n\u2013 elevate my mood<br>\n\u2013 buy a pair of jeans in the regular size department, not the plus-size section<br>\n\u2013 strengthen my heart<br>\n\u2013 hike with friends and my son<br>\n\u2013 be able to enjoy the outdoors like I used to<br>\n\u2013 fit comfortably in a movie theater and airplane seat<br>\n\u2013 not be as self conscious<br>\n\u2013 regain self confidence<\/p>\n<p>The lack of confidence and constantly being self conscious of my appearance has turned me into an introvert. I don\u2019t have new experiences because I am afraid of looking stupid or people judging me on me weight. I\u2019ve developed anxiety and panic attacks at the thought of meeting new people and trying new things. The result is I\u2019ve stopped living. <\/p>\n<p>I want to live. <\/p>\n<p>I want to sky dive, zip line, kayak, travel, talk to random people and make friends everywhere like I used to. I want to show my son life is wonderful and worth experiencing and that the world is a God created wonder meant for us to enjoy. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what motivates me. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve created little reminders for myself for when I need reminding. Like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/thecrescat\/weight-loss-bucket-list\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this pinterest page<\/a> which features photos of some of the things I want to do when I get in better shape. I pull this up on my phone and look at it work or at home. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also started praying more. You\u2019ve all heard the term a \u201cfox hole Christian\u201d or that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/There_are_no_atheists_in_foxholes\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">there are no atheists in fox holes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The statement \u201cThere are no atheists in foxholes\u201d is an aphorism used to argue that in times of extreme stress or fear, such as during war (\u201cin foxholes\u201d), all people will believe in, or hope for, a higher power.[<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/There_are_no_atheists_in_foxholes\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wikipedia<\/a>]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, some days working out can be like intentionally putting yourself in that fox hole. You pray, \u201cLord, get me through this\u201d \u2026 or at least you should be.    <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve noticed a trend in exercise motivation \u2013 the dig deep within yourself, inner strength, you can do this kind of stuff. Yes, you can do all that but you can\u2019t do it alone. And just like exercise, prayer can be habit forming once you get in the habit of doing it daily. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve failed and failed again in the past because this was something I always tried to do on my own. But as with life, as with all things, you can\u2019t rely solely on yourself. If you do you\u2019ve set yourself up for failure. <\/p>\n<p>We need God as well as needing our friends and family. That outward motivation is as important as the need to inwardly motivate ourselves. We need movement in our lives as much as we need prayer and we should be doing both as readily as we breathe. <\/p>\n<p>You know what gets me through walks, when my heart is pounding and my back starts to hurt\u2026 the rosary. The rhythm of the words keeps my pace and prayer propels me forward. <\/p>\n<p>When I confess on giving up it wasn\u2019t just my weight I\u2019d given up on. I\u2019d given up on happiness. I\u2019d also given up on prayer. I\u2019d allowed myself to be swallowed up in my miseries.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not trying to change my life. The thought of that is too overwhelming. I\u2019m just going to try and change today. Today I\u2019ll pray. Today I\u2019ll treat myself with kindness and eat well. Today I\u2019ll exercise and make better choices.
