The lesbian parents of an 11-year-old<\/strong> boy who is undergoing the process of becoming a girl last night defended the decision, claiming it was better for a child to have a sex change when young.<\/p>\n

Thomas Lobel, who now calls himself Tammy, is undergoing controversial hormone blocking treatment in Berkeley, California to stop him going through puberty as a boy. Pauline Moreno and Debra Lobel [the lesbian parents] warn that children with gender identity disorder forced to postpone transitioning could face a higher risk of suicide<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I suppose his loving parents didn\u2019t read the research indicating the much higher risk of suicide<\/em> in individuals after<\/em> sex reassignment surgery. <\/p>\n

From a Swedish Study<\/a>: Persons with transsexualism, after sex reassignment, have considerably higher risks for mortality, suicidal behaviour, and psychiatric morbidity than the general population. Our findings suggest that sex reassignment, although alleviating gender dysphoria, may not suffice as treatment for transsexualism, and should inspire improved psychiatric and somatic care after sex reassignment for this patient group.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The simple fact is, sex reassignment surgery does not cure gender dysphoria<\/a>. That\u2019s because it is a physical<\/em> treatment for a psychological<\/em> problem. The proper response to a child threatening genital mutilation is \u201cpsyche evaluation STAT\u201d, not \u201cQuick! Grab the scalpel and hormone therapy drugs\u201d! <\/p>\n

The mothers say that one of the first things Thomas told them when he learned sign language aged three \u2013 because of a speech impediment \u2013 was, \u2018I am a girl\u2019.<\/p>\n

At age seven, after threatening genital mutilation on himself, psychiatrists diagnosed Thomas with gender identity disorder. By the age of eight, he began transitioning. This summer, he started taking hormone-blocking drugs, which will stop him from experiencing puberty.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Two things strike me here. <\/p>\n

One, he expressed this desire at three. THREE! When my son was three he wanted to be a sea monster. I didn\u2019t take him to a cosmetic surgeon and have gills slit into his throat for shit\u2019s sake. <\/p>\n

Secondly, of course he said he wanted to be a girl. Is it really that shocking? He is being raised by two lesbians, after all, with no immediate male role models in his life. He was the odd man out in the family and was expressing a desire to fit in. He wanted to be able to identify with someone, and sadly his someone was two lesbians. What other options, based on his limited and short life experiences did he have to chose from? I mean, honestly. <\/p>\n

My heart breaks for this little boy and the problems he is going to face all because his parent\u2019s let a three year old dictate the decision. What other responsible parents do you know that let their child makes these kinds of life long decisions? \u201cTammy\u201d may be eleven now, but still. Kids three, eight, or eleven, are completely incapable of understanding long term consequences. They cannot comprehend forever, and changing your sex surgically and with hormones is forever. <\/p>\n

Quite frankly, the fact that \u201cTammy\u2019s\u201d parents indulged this whim, probably because it makes them the cool kids in the gay group, should have alerted red flags for child protective services. Why this is being celebrated and not condemned as child abuse blows my mind. This is negligence. This is evil. This is sexual exploitation of a child and should anger you. Plainly, this is child abuse. <\/p>\n

PS- I also think those youtube videos of little girls dancing and lipsyncing to Ke$ha<\/a> is child abuse. What ever happened to maintaining and protecting the innocence of children? I swear. <\/p>\n
