charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div class=\"level__left\">\n<div class=\"level__item\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"level__item\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1700\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1700\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1700\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/1333\/2021\/05\/pexels-alex-green-5700186-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1700\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Alex Green from Pexels<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>In my book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Being-Journey-Toward-Presence-Authenticity\/dp\/1734823461\/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=being+karl+forehand&amp;qid=1621178214&amp;sr=8-1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Being: A Journey Toward Presence and Authenticity<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>I wrote the following in Introduction.\u00a0 <em>Don\u2019t Waste a Good Crisis <\/em>is also the title of the first section of the book<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em>Part I is an accounting of probably the most significant event in my life.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t my wedding day\u2014it wasn\u2019t the birth of my children (although both of those are significant).\u00a0 It was a crisis.\u00a0 My friend, Dr. Paul Fitzgerald says, <em>never waste a good crisis<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 <em>~<\/em>Karl Forehand, Being<\/p>\n<p>When I was a pastor, I had to respond to many different levels of problems.\u00a0 There were operational issues with the church.\u00a0 People had disagreements.\u00a0 Other people got sick.\u00a0 And eventually, people had serious situations and some of them passed away.\u00a0 In the small town of my first pastorate, I buried two young adults both died in car accidents in the first year.\u00a0 They were actually cousins \u2013 believe me, it was a crisis!<\/p>\n<p>I noticed people have predictable ways they respond to a crisis.\u00a0 Some use platitudes because they are uncomfortable.\u00a0 They plan their words ahead of time and then recite them to each other hoping they will help in one way or another.\u00a0 Other people just prepare food and try to do something that shows they care.\u00a0 Sometimes people will even minimize the crisis as <em>God\u2019s will<\/em> or <em>for our good <\/em>or something else they hope will smooth over the pain of the event so that we can get back to normal.\u00a0 But most of these things don\u2019t work long term.<\/p>\n<p>My crisis came mostly because of 20 years of stuffing things down and trying to use quick fixes.\u00a0 After all that time, eventually it all came to the surface at once.\u00a0 In the book, I talk about how \u201cmy thoughts were crashing into each other\u201d.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know how to get out of the situation I was in.\u00a0 It wouldn\u2019t help to stuff it down \u2013 that wasn\u2019t working any more.<\/p>\n<p>So, how does a crisis help us get better?<\/p>\n<p>For me, my <em>dark night <\/em>forced me to be willing to do whatever it took to get better.\u00a0 I\u2019ll let you read about the actual story if you want, but mainly it forced everything out into the open where I had to deal with it.\u00a0 I committed to the hard work even before I knew what that work was.\u00a0 The crisis humbled me enough to know that I didn\u2019t have the answers and would have to find them and trust the people that did know.<\/p>\n<p>I hope it doesn\u2019t take a crisis like mine to force you to do the work for your own healing.\u00a0 If you are in the middle of a crisis, seek out expert help and, for once, be willing to really listen.<\/p>\n<p>Religion sometime teaches us spiritual bypassing and looking for miraculous answers.\u00a0 Certainly, miraculous things happen every day, but we might be better served to find out what we can do to find healing.\u00a0 Maybe instead of praying for miracles, we could commit to doing what it takes to find healing for the places where we are stuck.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe this crisis you are in will give you the impetus to seek to out help and commit to the work necessary to progress in you journey.\u00a0 If you\u2019re not in a crisis, maybe my story will guide you to be proactive and head it off at that pass!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m rooting for you!<\/p>\n<p>Be where you are, be who you are,<\/p>\n<p>Karl Forehand<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Being-Journey-Toward-Presence-Authenticity\/dp\/1734823461\/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&amp;keywords=karl+forehand&amp;qid=1618723607&amp;sr=8-2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Order Being: A Journey Toward Presence and Authentic<\/a><\/h4>\n<h5>Karl Forehand is a former pastor, podcaster, and award-winning author.
