charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><figure id=\"attachment_1726\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1726\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1726\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/1333\/2021\/05\/pexels-liza-summer-6382728-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Liza Summer from Pexels<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>In my book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Being-Journey-Toward-Presence-Authenticity\/dp\/1734823461\/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=being+karl+forehand&amp;qid=1621766991&amp;sr=8-1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Being: A Journey Toward Presence and Authenticity<\/a>, I talked about facing our pain in the chapter\u00a0<em>Being with Pain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>Really, a lot of the book is about facing the pain we often must to heal.\u00a0 Whether it is getting into shape or breaking an addiction or dealing with past trauma, the process is the same.\u00a0 I wrote:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Everyone knows that, even after a few days, our bodies will begin to adjust to the new routine and become stronger so that we don\u2019t feel as much pain even with more involved practices.\u00a0 Every day, we will be able to walk further or lift more or breath better.\u00a0 But there\u2019s the pain!\u00a0 It\u2019s always going to be painful first.<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0~Being, Karl Forehand<\/p>\n<p>When we decide to deal with the pain in our lives, we really only have about 3 options.<\/p>\n<p>The first option is to\u00a0<em>quit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>I knew it would be painful to face the trauma in my life, just like it was painful to experience two-a-day practices in football.\u00a0 Part of me knew that the pain would get better, but I chose to avoid it.\u00a0 The trouble was that the pain got worse.\u00a0 If I don\u2019t get into shape, which is painful, eventually it will be painful to do simple tasks.\u00a0 If I don\u2019t face the trauma from my past, eventually it will emerge in more painful episodes.<\/p>\n<p>Another option is\u00a0try to\u00a0<em>numb<\/em> the pain.\u00a0 There is no end to temporary fixes like drugs, comfort food or things like spiritual bypassing.\u00a0 In a way most religion is meant to avoid the painful and hard things of life is search of the new drug that makes us feel good and then lets down on Monday when we come off the high.\u00a0 Television, social media, superficial friendships can all help us forget the painful and necessary work we need to do.<\/p>\n<p>The best option is\u00a0<em>leaning in\u00a0<\/em>to pain.\u00a0 This is not news to us.\u00a0 We all know that eventually it will be easier to walk a mile or speak in public or be with our trauma\u2013we just don\u2019t want to deal with the initial pain.\u00a0 I tried for about 50 years to find a magic solution to avoid this timeless principle, but so far the magic elixir has eluded me and most things are like football practice\u2013they hurt a lot at first, but eventually we grow stronger\u2013the muscles heal\u2013and we are grateful in the end.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you will investigate my book called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Being-Journey-Toward-Presence-Authenticity\/dp\/1734823461\/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=being+karl+forehand&amp;qid=1621766991&amp;sr=8-1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Being.<\/a>\u00a0 The whole first section of the book is about me finally being desperate enough to do whatever it took to find healing.\u00a0 It was definitely painful, but it was also worth it!\u00a0 It started as an attempt to just record what I went through, but later I realized I had written something bigger than myself.<\/p>\n<p>I wish you well on your journey of facing your pain.<\/p>\n<p>Be where you are, Be who you are,<\/p>\n<p>Karl Forehand<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Being-Journey-Toward-Presence-Authenticity\/dp\/1734823461\/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&amp;keywords=karl+forehand&amp;qid=1618723607&amp;sr=8-2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Order Being: A Journey Toward Presence and Authentic<\/a><\/h4>\n<h5>Karl Forehand is a former pastor, podcaster, and award-winning author.
