(CNN)<\/strong> \u2014 The Florida pastor who had planned to burn copies of the Quran on Saturday has called it off.<\/p>\n
The Rev. Terry Jones of the Gainesville, Florida-based Dove World Outreach Center made the announcement Thursday.<\/p>\n
Earlier Thursday, President Obama said Jones\u2019 plan, which had triggered worldwide controversy, would be a \u201crecruitment bonanza for al Qaeda<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou could have serious violence in places like Pakistan<\/a> or Afghanistan\u201d as a result of the proposal by Jones, Obama said on ABC\u2019s \u201cGood Morning America.\u201d \u201cThis could increase the recruitment of individuals who\u2019d be willing to blow themselves up in American<\/a> cities, or European cities.\u201d<\/p>\n

UPDATE #3 via NYTimes<\/a>: <\/strong>Pastor Cancels Koran Burning and Plans to Meet Imam<\/h4>\n

GAINESVILLE, Fla. \u2013 The pastor planning a burning of the Koran on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks<\/a> said Thursday he would not go forward with the event, adding he plans to meet with the imam planning to build an Islamic<\/a> center near ground zero.<\/p>\n
Terry Jones, the pastor from Gainesville, Fla., said at a press conference, \u201cWe have agreed to cancel the event.\u201d<\/p>\n
The pastor\u2019s announcement came after a growing chorus of demands, from President Obama to religious leaders, American generals and others, that he cancel the event planned for Saturday because of the potential imact on Christian-Muslim relations and the effect a Koran burning would have on American troops fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.<\/p>\n
But details of the pastor\u2019s planned meeting with the Imam, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf<\/a>, remained elusive. Mr. Jones did say he got a promise to move the New York mosque, although such an agreement could not be independently confirmed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have agreed to meet with him,\u201d Mr. Jones said in reference to the Imam.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have at this time no regrets,\u201d he said. \u201cWe feel we have accomplished our goal. We are very very happy with the outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n
The pastor\u2019s decision came the same day President Obama said that the pastor\u2019s plan to burn the Koran\u00a0 on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks was a \u201cstunt\u201d that violates American principles of religious tolerance.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf he\u2019s listening, I just hope he understands that what he\u2019s proposing to do is completely contrary to our values as Americans,\u201d Mr. Obama said in an interview shown Thursday on ABC\u2019s \u201cGood Morning America,\u201d referring to to Mr. Jones.<\/p>\n
