Fans of Peter Park and U2 will get a little tease Friday morning when the first song from the long-awaited musical collaboration between director Julie Taymor<\/a> and Bono and the Edge is unveiled on \u201cGood Morning America<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Peter Parker<\/strong> has always been a hard-luck character so maybe it\u2019s appropriate that his wobbly\u00a0\u00a0\u201dSpider-Man:\u00a0 Turn Off the Dark<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d has been under a nasty black cloud as the most expensive Broadway<\/a> production ever planned. On Friday, though, the\u00a0creative team behind the\u00a0venture\u00a0hopes to\u00a0spin\u00a0a new success story as\u00a0 Bono<\/strong>, the Edge<\/strong>, director Julie Taymor<\/strong> and\u00a0star Reeve Carney<\/strong> bring a one-song preview to \u201cGood Morning America<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d\u2026 Carney, who portrays the nerd-turned-hero Parker, will sing a song from the show in front of a live audience at the Hudson <\/strong>Theatre<\/strong> (145 West 44th St.) and, with fans invited to show up at the venue for free access to the performance, there should be a high level of excitement in the room. For television viewers, the Tony-winning Taymor will be interviewed back at the \u201cGMA\u201d studio and the two famed members of U2<\/strong> \u2014 who have created the music and lyrics for \u201cTurn Off the Dark\u201d \u2014 will beam in by satellite.<\/p>\n

This fall\u2019s Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark<\/em> marks the first time that U2<\/a> frontman Bono<\/a> and guitarist The Edge<\/a> have written a score for the stage. But the rock stars\u2019 love affair with musical theater predates their involvement in the show, which begins previews Nov. 14 and opens Dec. 21.<\/div>\n

\u201cA school production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat<\/a><\/em> was where I first found my voice,\u201d Bono says via e-mail from Europe, where the band is on tour. His father, moreover, \u201cwas a fine tenor and sang in many musicals<\/a>.\u201d Bono recalls him \u201cdressed as a cowboy in Oklahoma!<\/a><\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Edge singles out West Side Story<\/em> and The Music Man<\/em> as \u201ctruly inspiring. The ambition for us was to write a score that matched the imagination of the best of contemporary music and the best of musical theater combined.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bono and Edge\u2019s music and lyrics accompany a book co-written by playwright<\/a> Glen Berger<\/a> and Julie Taymor<\/a>, who also directs. Taymor sought to spin an original tale that retained the \u201cessence of this myth\u201d adored by comic-book and movie fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe basic story,\u201d she says, \u201cis this geeky boy (Peter Parker, who acquires a superhero alter-ego when bitten by a genetically altered spider), who could be anybody, acquires this great power. And with great power comes great responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bono agrees that \u201cwhat\u2019s special is the very ordinariness of Peter Parker. It sounds odd to say, but Spider-Man is as important to the 21st century as the story of Ulysses was to the ancient Greeks<\/a>. These are morality plays, where luminous characters duke it out in ways very revealing of the nature of who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rumored to be the most expensive Broadway musical ever produced, Bono and the Edge<\/span><\/em><\/span> and Taymor\u2019s \u201cSpiderman\u201d began full-cast rehearsals in mid-August. <\/span><\/em> <\/span>The musical is set to begin previews at the Foxwoods Theater in Manhattan on Nov. 14, and is scheduled to open officially on Dec. 21. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
