{"id":3594,"date":"2010-09-28T11:15:19","date_gmt":"2010-09-28T18:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/thedudeabides\/?p=3594"},"modified":"2010-09-28T11:15:19","modified_gmt":"2010-09-28T18:15:19","slug":"bonus-swag-grab-quiz-how-would-you-score-on-pews-new-religion-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/thedudeabides\/2010\/09\/28\/bonus-swag-grab-quiz-how-would-you-score-on-pews-new-religion-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Bonus SWAG GRAB QUIZ: How would you score on Pew&#8217;s new religion test?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/pewforum.org\/Other-Beliefs-and-Practices\/U-S-Religious-Knowledge-Survey.aspx\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"> <\/a><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"><strong><span style=\"color:#800000\">Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life today released the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/pewforum.org\/Other-Beliefs-and-Practices\/U-S-Religious-Knowledge-Survey.aspx\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">fascinating (some might say disconcerting) results of a survey on religion knowledge. <\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The headline you\u2019ll see on most stories about the survey will say something like <strong>ATHEISTS KNOW MORE ABOUT RELIGION THAN CHRISTIANS DO.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">The study\u2019s executive summary begins thusly:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Atheists and agnostics, Jews and <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Mormons<\/a> are among the highest-scoring groups on a new survey of religious knowledge, outperforming <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Protestantism\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protestantism\" target=\"_blank\">evangelical<\/a> Protestants, mainline Protestants and Catholics on questions about the core teachings, history and leading figures of major <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Major religious groups\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_religious_groups\" target=\"_blank\">world religions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On average, Americans correctly answer 16 of the 32 religious knowledge questions on the survey by the <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Pew Research Center\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/pewresearch.org\" target=\"_blank\">Pew Research Center<\/a>\u2019s Forum on Religion &amp; Public Life. Atheists and agnostics average 20.9 correct answers. Jews and Mormons do about as well, averaging 20.5 and 20.3 correct answers, respectively. Protestants as a whole average 16 correct answers; Catholics as a whole, 14.7. Atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons perform better than other groups on the survey even after controlling for differing levels of education\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>On questions about <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Christianity\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christianity\" target=\"_blank\">Christianity<\/a> \u2013 including a battery of questions about the Bible \u2013 Mormons (7.9 out of 12 right on average) and white evangelical Protestants (7.3 correct on average) show the highest levels of knowledge. Jews and atheists\/agnostics stand out for their knowledge of other world religions, including <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Islam\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islam\" target=\"_blank\">Islam<\/a>, <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhism<\/a>, Hinduism and <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Judaism\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Judaism\" target=\"_blank\">Judaism<\/a>; out of 11 such questions on the survey, Jews answer 7.9 correctly (nearly three better than the national average) and atheists\/agnostics answer 7.5 correctly (2.5 better than the national average). Atheists\/agnostics and Jews also do particularly well on questions about the role of religion in public life, including a question about what the U.S. Constitution says about religion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other provocative findings include:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13.2px;color:#ff0000\">45 percent of Catholics in the <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"United States\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667%20(United%20States)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\">United States<\/a> do not know that their church teaches that the bread and wine used in Communion do not merely symbolize but actually become the body and blood of Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><span style=\"font-size:13.2px;color:#ff0000\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13.2px;color:#ff0000\">53 percent of Protestant Christians cannot correctly identify <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Martin Luther\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Luther\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Luther<\/a> as the person whose writings and actions inspired the <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Protestant Reformation\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protestant_Reformation\" target=\"_blank\">Protestant Reformation<\/a>, which made their religion a separate branch of Christianity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><span style=\"font-size:13.2px;color:#ff0000\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13.2px;color:#ff0000\">43 percent of Jews do not recognize that Maimonides, one of the most venerated rabbis in history, was Jewish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><span style=\"font-size:13.2px;color:#ff0000\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13.2px;color:#ff0000\">Only 47 percent of Americans know that the Dalai Lama is <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Buddhism\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buddhism\" target=\"_blank\">Buddhist<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><span style=\"font-size:13.2px;color:#ff0000\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13.2px;color:#ff0000\">And a mere 38 percent correctly associate Vishnu and Shiva with Hinduism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><span style=\"font-size:13.2px;color:#ff0000\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13.2px\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">Only about a quarter of all Americans (27%) correctly answer that most people in Indonesia \u2013 the country with the <\/span><a title=\"world\u2019s largest Muslim population\" href=\"http:\/\/pewforum.org\/WorkArea\/linkit.aspx?LinkIdentifier=id&amp;ItemID=376\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color:#ff0000\">world\u2019s largest Muslim population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#ff0000\"> \u2013 are Muslims.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align:center\">\n<\/p><p
