Tom Waits is among our very favorite artists here at GGHQ.<\/p>\n

So we were THRILLED to hear this morning that he\u2019d been nominated to the Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll Hall of Fame for possible induction this year.<\/p>\n

Waits is a true iconoclast. We love him so.<\/p>\n

This is what the RnRHoF had to say about him:<\/p>\n

Only one songwriter could be covered by the\u00a0Ramones<\/a> (\u201cI Don\u2019t Want to Grow Up\u201d) and\u00a0the Eagles<\/a> (\u201cOld 55\u201d). \u00a0Beginning with his first album in 1973, Tom Waits has carved out a unique place in rock & roll. \u00a0His music mixes Chicago blues, parlor ballads, beat poetry, pulp fiction parlance and \u2013 when you least expected it \u2013 heart-breaking tenderness. \u00a0His enormously influential live shows combine elements of German cabaret, vaudeville and roadhouse rock. \u00a0After establishing a successful early style as a wry singer-songwriter, Waits went through a dramatic expansion with\u00a0Swordfishtrombones<\/em> (1983). Disregarding musical borders and commercial considerations, he set off in wild pursuit of the Muse. \u00a0Waits has composed film scores, musical theatre and an operetta. He has co-written with\u00a0Keith Richards<\/a> and William Burroughs. \u00a0His songs have been covered by Screamin\u2019 Jay Hawkins,\u00a0Solomon Burke<\/a>, Marianne Faithful, the Neville Brothers,\u00a0Robert Plant <\/a>and Alison Krauss and the Blind Boys of Alabama. He has recorded with the Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, the Replacements and\u00a0Roy Orbison<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 A tribute to his great influence is how many of his songs have been recorded by artists who usually write their own \u2013 including\u00a0Bruce Springsteen<\/a>(\u201cJersey Girl\u201d), Tim Buckley (\u201cMartha\u201d),\u00a0Johnny Cash<\/a> (\u201cDown By the Train\u201d),\u00a0Bob Seger<\/a> (\u201c16 Shells from a Thirty-Ought Six\u201d), T-Bone Burnett (\u201cTime\u201d), Tori Amos (\u201cTime\u201d), Steve Earle (\u201cWay Down In The Hole\u201d),\u00a0Elvis Costello<\/a> (\u201cInnocent When You Dream\u201d) and\u00a0Rod Stewart<\/a> (\u201cDowntown Train\u201d).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
