{"id":122678,"date":"2021-10-03T15:04:15","date_gmt":"2021-10-03T13:04:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/thefreethinker\/?p=122678"},"modified":"2021-10-03T15:04:15","modified_gmt":"2021-10-03T13:04:15","slug":"rcc-in-france-as-many-as-10000-may-have-been-sexually-abused","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/thefreethinker\/2021\/10\/rcc-in-france-as-many-as-10000-may-have-been-sexually-abused\/","title":{"rendered":"RCC in France: As many as 10,000 may have been sexually abused"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><figure id=\"attachment_122689\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122689\" style=\"width: 699px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-122689 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/1122\/2021\/10\/abuse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"699\" height=\"430\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-122689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via YouTube<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p><strong>BACK in March of this year, Jean-Marc Sauv\u00e9, above, President of the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Church (CIASE), revealed that, since 1950, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cat least\u201d 10,000 children and vulnerable adults had fallen prey to abusive Catholic priests and others within the church\u2019s hierarchy.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the time, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/246696\/investigator-there-could-be-10000-abuse-victims-in-french-catholic-church-since-1950\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\"><em>Catholic News Agency<\/em><\/a> reported that Sauv\u00e9, head of the commission, said that the body\u2019s previous estimate of 3,000 victims was inaccurate because of the huge number of people who came forward with allegations of abuse after CIASE was set up by Catholic Church in France.<\/p>\n<p>The commission received testimonies from June 2019 through October 2020, during which time it identified approximately 3,000 victims, but Sauv\u00e9 said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em> This certainly does not take account of the totality.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sauv\u00e9 said that most of the events reported to CIASE took place in the 1950s and 1960s, and the abuse primarily happened in schools, followed by catechism classes, and youth movements or summer camps.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty percent of the victims who contacted the commission are over 70 years old and 50 percent are between 50 and 69 years old.<\/p>\n<p>CIASE is looking not only at clerical sexual abuse of minors but also clerical abuse of vulnerable adults. Of the abuse accounts received, however, 87 percent were committed against minors.<\/p>\n<p>Among young adult victims, 33 percent were members of religious communities or seminarians at the time of the abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Sauv\u00e9 added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>We can say with a high degree of certainty that within the Catholic Church, the abuses mainly concerned men and not women, unlike society.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/france\/20211003-thousands-of-paedophiles-operated-in-french-catholic-church-since-1950-commission-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\"><em>France 24<\/em><\/a>, The commission\u2019s report is due to be released on Tuesday, October 5, following a probe lasting two-and-a-half years.<\/p>\n<p>The report, which Sauv\u00e9 says runs to 2,500 pages, will attempt to quantify both the number of offenders and the number of victims.<\/p>\n<p>It will also look into \u201cthe mechanisms, notably institutional and cultural ones\u201d within the church which allowed paedophiles to remain, and will offer 45 proposals.<\/p>\n<p>The commission was set up in 2018 by the French Catholic Church in response to a number of scandals that shook the Church in France and worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Its formation also came after Pope Francis passed a landmark measure obliging those who know about sex abuse in the Catholic Church to report it to their superiors.<\/p>\n<p>Made up of 22 legal professionals, doctors, historians, sociologists and theologians, its brief was to investigate allegations of child sex abuse by clerics dating back to the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>When it began its work it called for witness statements and set up a telephone hotline, then reported receiving thousands of messages in the months that followed.<\/p>\n<p>Sauv\u00e9 declined to provide an update on the number of\u00a0 priests and church officials who are believed to have perpetrated the abuse. The last estimate was that 1,500 had been guilty of abusive behaviour.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_111790\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111790\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-111790 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/1122\/2020\/12\/Ventura-Luigi-Ventura-YouTube.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"435\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via YouTube<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2019, the Pope\u2019s former Ambassador to France, ex-Papal Nuncio Luigi Ventura, above, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/thefreethinker\/2020\/12\/op-ed-paris-trial-sent-an-appalling-message-to-clerical-abusers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">was tried for sexually assaulting five young men<\/a>, including a Paris City Hall official.
