This week I shared an article with you describing the journey that I\u2019m on with God (\u201cI\u2019m Done With Living Like a Christian<\/a>\u201c). I desire to know Jesus in a fresh way, one that is not defined merely by theological theoreticals or \u201cdoing,\u201d but rather \u201cbeing.\u201d \u201cBeing\u201d meaning to discover who I am in relation to Jesus rather than merely \u201cdoing\u201d the ethics of Jesus.<\/p>\n

This is not some weird \u201cdoing vs being\u201d dichotomy, but rather that out of our \u201cbeing\u201d with Christ we develop his character to naturally \u201cdo\u201d the things he \u201cdoes.\u201d\u00a0 And insofar that we learn, prepare, know, and engage with the Spirit of Christ, then we can be prepared for the moments when doing Christian ethics matters most. Ethics like \u2013 enemy love, service to the poor, sexual purity, non-judgmental attitudes \u2013 all are wonderful acts of \u201cdoing\u201d when they are the outflow of Christ-centered \u201cbeing.\u201d\u00a0 This is not to say that spirituality should look the same for everyone, but rather is what I feel God doing in me.<\/p>\n

In this season in my journey, I\u2019m spending time in the morning (and sometimes at night) going through the book of Matthew.\u00a0 I am reading it slowly\u2026 chuck of text at a time.\u00a0 I read it.\u00a0 Re-read it.\u00a0 Re-read it again.\u00a0 And while reading, I ask God to make a phrase or word stand out.\u00a0 Whatever that word or phrase is, I then ask God to speak to me about possible application or insight that fits where I am in my life with Christ.\u00a0 Basically, I do Lectio Divina \/ contemplative listening prayer \/ journaling (about my various insights and [when I am so privileged] words from God).\u00a0 This has been empowering in many ways.\u00a0 I also plan to build into my life rhythm one day a month where I go on a half day spiritual retreat.\u00a0 Luckily for me, we have a wonderful retreat center just outside the city.<\/p>\n

I hope you don\u2019t read the above description and think that I figured this out.\u00a0 In fact, there\u2019s days when I don\u2019t feel like sitting in silence with my Bible at all.\u00a0 But I persist because I know that long term benefits will be worth it.\u00a0 Well, I hope to persist.<\/p>\n
