In 1 Kings 1-11, 21 we get a sweeping story of the downfall of Israel. \u00a0Israel chose to go after other gods and the things of Egypt. \u00a0A key passage in this narrative dealing Solomon is the visit from the Queen of Sheba who says:<\/p>\n

\u2026he made you king to maintain justice and righteousness. \u00a01 Kings 10.9<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Solomon was called to justice and righteousness and failed at both. \u00a0First, lets look at justice.<\/p>\n

\u2026the account of the forced labor king Solomon conscripted to build the Lord\u2019s temple, his own palace, the terraces, the wall of Jerusalem. \u00a01 Kings 9.15 <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The ones who were liberated from \u201cforced labor\u201d are now enslaving their own people. In a sense, Israel has become like Egypt. \u00a0Walter Brueggemann describes a contrast system that YHWH intended the covenant people to uphold \u2013 system of egalitarian care for the whole of Israel (105). \u00a0God\u2019s people failed at such a vocation the day they desired a king to be like \u201cother nations\u201d and continued down a dark path under Solomon\u2019s leadership. \u00a0Israel became Egypt.<\/p>\n

The purpose of the slavery was to build the Temple. \u00a0The place for worship of YHWH was built via an idolatrous method. \u00a0Slaves led to cheap labor, which led to building campaigns that caused Queens to visit and awe. \u00a0This is where the failure of righteousness comes in.<\/p>\n

Solomon wanted to be like and greater than other nations. \u00a0He married foreign women and worshipped their gods (11.3-4), he \u201cimported\u201d \u201cchariots and\u2026 horses\u201d for military security and thus no longer needed God\u2019s protection (10.26-29), and exported weapons to acquire \u201csilver\u201d (10.29) and \u201cgold\u201d (10.14). \u00a0All was forbidden in the Law (Deuteronomy 17.16-17). \u00a0Solomon\u2019s idolatry sent Israel into deeper idolatry and violence until it was embodied as complete evil in Ahab (1 Kings 21.25).<\/p>\n
