Most of what I recall from those early childhood and teenage years bring memories of good things.\u00a0 People genuinely taught me that loving Jesus matters more than anything else in the world.\u00a0 The world, after all, is corrupt and the place we truly long for is far, far away \u2013 heaven.\u00a0 So we are to love Jesus and hate the world.<\/p>\n<p>Now, this is not hatred toward the people on earth.\u00a0 I did not grow up in a church culture that taught that we ought to tell outsiders how much they suck, but that this \u201cworld is not my home, I\u2019m just a passin\u2019 through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>World and physicality = bad.<br>\nJesus and spiritual bliss in a distant heaven = goal of the game.<\/p>\n<p>This distinction came with a subset of beliefs about the destiny of God\u2019s world.\u00a0 Eventually this planet would be destroyed and we Christians would \u201cfly away\u201d to heaven at the rapture of the church.\u00a0 Certain Christians understood the timing of the rapture as it corresponds to the book of Revelation differently than others, but no one ever denied the imminent return of Jesus to evacuate the church out of earth.<\/p>\n<p>What I\u2019ve come to realize is that the church of my youth probably had the rapture all wrong.\u00a0 You see, the Bible flows from Creation (Gen 1-2) to Renewed Creation (Rev 21-22).\u00a0 This is the narrative of Scripture.\u00a0 Nothing in the text (if read in its proper context) alludes to the actual complete destruction of the planet.\u00a0 This world\u2019s worth to the Creator runs deep and because of this, the world as a whole ought to be\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepangeablog.com\/2010\/06\/14\/is-the-earth-intrinsically-valuable-or-simply-a-resource-quote-to-ponder-christopher-j-h-wright-repost\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">intrinsically valuable<\/a>\u00a0to us.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Physical\/earthly realities such as social injustice, violence, hunger, preventable sickness, and the destruction of nature are invitations to the church of Jesus to get our hands dirty and proclaim that\u00a0<strong><em>this world matters<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(even in its broken state)!\u00a0<em>Christ will complete creation upon his return, uniting heaven and earth for the life of the age to come!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The famous \u201crapture\u201d passage is found in 1 Thessalonians 4.15-17 and reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to the Lord\u2019s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.\u00a0 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will\u00a0<em>rise<\/em>\u00a0first.\u00a0 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This passage, when placed in the larger context of the chapter, is answering questions that Christians in Thessalonica had concerning death.\u00a0\u00a0<em>What has happened to our loved ones who have died before the return of Christ to earth? What is theirs and our ultimate destiny?<\/em>\u00a0Paul\u2019s answer:\u00a0<strong><em>bodily resurrection at the return of Christ to earth!\u00a0 Not an escape into the sky [see\u00a0appendix\u00a0below!].<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this passage, Paul borrows two specific images from the Old Testament that would have been familiar to Jewish converts and Gentiles who were familiarizing themselves with the Hebrew tradition.\u00a0 The first of these that Paul employs in the text has to do with\u00a0<em>Moses who comes down from Mount Sinai with the Law with the great blast of the trumpet<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The second image is taken from\u00a0<em>Daniel chapter 7 where the \u201cone like the son of man\u201d \u00a0(or \u201chuman being\u201d or \u201cThe Human One\u201d) and the community he represents is vindicated over the enemies of the people of God<\/em>.\u00a0 Clouds here symbolize the power and authoritative judgement of God about the rescue of his people. This idea now seems to be applied to Christians who are facing various forms of persecution.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there is a third image in the text that comes from outside of the canonical context.\u00a0 This is\u00a0<em>the image of an emperor who visits a city.\u00a0 The people of that region would have gone out to meet him to usher him into their home in a royal procession<\/em>\u00a0out in the\u00a0<em><strong>open air<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 This, Paul seems to apply to the church who will usher in their King into the new creation.***<\/p>\n<p>Rapture, as it is popularly understood, is nowhere to be found in this \u201crapture\u201d passage.\u00a0 Christ will return to resurrect, to purge, to heal, and to establish the eternal kingdom of God on this earth. Heaven and earth will unite like a bride and husband \u2013 for all eternity. That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p>The Bible teaches that when Christ comes back, it will be Good News!\u00a0 \u201c\u2018He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away\u2019\u201d (Revelation 21.4).\u00a0 Surely we cannot erase judgment from the picture, but the hope is that those in Christ will be raised to eternal life and everything that is wrong with this world will be made right.<\/p>\n<p>This world renewed is going to be our home for eternity, and we have the opportunity to reflect that future in our present. \u00a0Rapture invites us to escape this world: the last thing that Jesus would have ever taught! \u201cOn earth as in heaven\u201d is what he said, not \u201cin heaven away from the earth!\u201d Our world\u2019s future is hopeful. Word Identification<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The word underlying \u201cair\u201d in 1 Thessalonians 4.17 is the Greek word \u201c\u1f00\u03ae\u03c1\u201d (Strong\u2019s: #109).<\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>2. Meaning<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>1) the air, particularly the lower and denser air as distinguished from the higher and rarer air 2)the atmospheric region[1]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After surveying the above seven occurrences, it is clear that the definition is simply\u00a0<em>the area of unseen space in our atmosphere<\/em>.\u00a0 Below, the meaning in its various usages are explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u1f00<\/strong><strong>\u03ae\u03c1\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>a\u0113r<\/em>,\u00a0<strong>109<\/strong>), \u1f00\u03ad\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2,<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u1f41<em>,\u00a0<\/em>(\u1f04\u03b7\u03bc\u03b9<em>,\u00a0<\/em>\u1f04\u03c9, [cf. \u1f04\u03bd\u03b5\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2<em>,\u00a0<\/em>init.]),\u00a0<em>the air\u00a0<\/em>(particularly the lower and denser, as distinguished from the higher and rarer \u1f41<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u03b1\u1f30\u03b8\u03ae\u03c1<em>,\u00a0<\/em>cf. Hom. Il. 14, 288),\u00a0<em>the atmospheric region:\u00a0<\/em>Acts xxii. 23; 1 Th. iv. 17; Rev. ix. 2, xvi. 17; \u1f41 \u1f04\u03c1\u03c7\u03c9\u03bd<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\u03c2<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u1f00\u03ad\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2<em>\u00a0<\/em>in Eph. ii. 2 signifies \u201cthe ruler of the powers (spirits, see \u1f10\u03be\u03bf\u03c5\u03c3\u03af\u03b1\u00a0<strong>4 c.<\/strong>\u00a0\u03b2\u03b2.) in the air\u201d, i. e. the devil, the prince of the demons that according to Jewish opinion fill the realm of air (cf. Mey. ad loc.; [B. D. Am. ed. s. v. Air; Stuart in Bib. Sacr. for 1843, p. 139 sq.]). Sometimes indeed, \u1f00\u03ae\u03c1<em>\u00a0<\/em>denotes a hazy, obscure atmosphere (Hom. Il. 17, 644; 3, 381; 5, 356, etc.; Polyb. 18, 3, 7), but is nowhere quite equiv. to \u03c3\u03ba\u03cc\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2<em>,<\/em>\u2014 the sense which many injudiciously assign it in Eph. 1. c. \u1f00\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u03b4\u03ad\u03c1\u03b5\u03b9\u03bd (cf.\u00a0<em>verberat ictibus auras,\u00a0<\/em>Verg. Aen. 5, 377, of pugilists who miss their aim) i. e. to contend in vain, 1 Co. ix. 26; \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u1f00\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u03bb\u03b1\u03bb\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bd<em>\u00a0<\/em>(<em>verba ventis profundere,\u00a0<\/em>Lucr. 4, 929 (932)) \u201cto speak into the air\u201d i. e. without effect, used of those who speak what is not understood by the hearers, 1 Co. xiv. 9.*[2]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although \u1f00\u03ae\u03c1 is not a word that is frequent in the New Testament, it is interesting to note that there is only one other word that is translated into English as \u201cair.\u201d The Greek \u03bf\u1f50\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2 has a different meaning when used as \u201cair\u201d than \u1f00\u03ae\u03c1.\u00a0 Rather than referring to the \u201clower and denser air as distinguished from the higher and rarer air,\u201d it means:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>1. the vaulted expanse of the sky with all things visible in it<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>a.\u00a0<\/em><em>the universe, the world<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>b.\u00a0<\/em><em>the aerial heavens or sky, the region where the clouds and the tempests gather, and where thunder and lightning are produced<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>c.\u00a0<\/em><em>the sidereal or starry heavens<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>2. the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings[3]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It seems that the difference between these two words will prove to be significant.\u00a0 The word in the 1 Thessalonians text indicates the \u201cair\u201d of the \u201clower\u201d region as opposed to the \u201cheavens\u201d as \u03bf\u1f50\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2 can also be translated (heavens \u2013 24x, heavenly \u2013 1, heaven \u2013 218).\u00a0 In other words, Paul had an option to use either of the words to talk about the \u201cair\u201d but he chose to use the word that refers mostly to the lower atmospheric region.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>4. Meaning in Context<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the context of 1 Thessalonians 4.17, Paul is answering questions regarding the blessed Christian hope.\u00a0 What happens to Christ-followers who die before the return of the Messiah?\u00a0 Are they gone forever?\u00a0 And what about those of us who are waiting for this day?\u00a0 What are we to look forward to?\u00a0 In answer to these kinds of questions Paul describes the coming of Jesus as a moment of resurrection.\u00a0 Because Jesus died and rose again, his followers will someday be like him.\u00a0 They will have bodies that are restored to the image of Christ who is the image of God.<\/p>\n<p>Paul in this passage uses mixed metaphors to communicating the reality of the final resurrection.\u00a0 He employs imagery from the Old Testament as well as from Roman royalty.\u00a0 Christ will appear in such a way that it will be like Moses when he descended down from the Mountain of Sinai.\u00a0 He will come with the \u201cclouds\u201d meaning that he will come with the power \/ authority of heaven like the \u201cson of Man\u201d in Daniel 7.\u00a0 When this happens all followers of Jesus will be gathered around their King and will usher him into the new heavens and new earth.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the present passage of Scripture has been interpreted in several different ways; mostly indicating that the return of Christ will be a rapturous moment when God will snatch believers away from this evil world to meet him in the \u201cair\u201d (up in heaven) for eternity.\u00a0 There are several problems with this approach (too numerous to look at for this word study).\u00a0 The current word study exposes one of the fallacies in this interpretive scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Had the Apostle wanted to communicate that Christ coming downward to take us upward was the goal of the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0coming, he could have chosen to use a word like \u03bf\u1f50\u03c1\u03b1\u03bd\u03cc\u03c2.\u00a0 This word, which is interpreted as \u201cair\u201d on some occasions (as indicated above), would have given the impression that going to meet Christ in the \u201cair\u201d was a upward heavenly route.\u00a0 However, what this word study has discovered is that the word Paul chose to use was one that indicates the lower part of the atmosphere.\u00a0 Paul had a grammatical choice to make, and clearly he did not want to misguide his first century audience by making them think that being \u201cwith the Lord forever\u201d actually meant going to heaven, away from the creation project.\u00a0 So, in order to keep his metaphorical devices in place without giving the wrong impression, he chose to use \u1f00\u03ae\u03c1 to indicate that he was not talking about escaping this world; but rather being part of its redemptive process.\u00a0 If the alternative word had been selected, Paul would have given us the opportunity to affirm cosmological dualism.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>5. Verification<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There is no dispute of how \u1f00\u03ae\u03c1 is to be translated from Greek into English among the translations.\u00a0 In every version that was checked (ESV, KJV, NIV, and TNIV) this word is translated as \u201cair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After consulting the \u201cEaston Bible Dictionary\u201d we find that this word study\u2019s findings about the meaning of the word \u1f00\u03ae\u03c1 is consistent and verified.\u00a0 It states: \u201cThe atmosphere, as opposed to the higher regions of the sky (1Th_4:17; Rev_9:2; Rev_16:17).\u201d[4]\u00a0This is also confirmed by the UBS Greek Dictionary: \u201cair; ethereal region above the earth, space.\u201d[5]<\/p>\n<hr size=\"1\">\n<h1>FOOTNOTES<\/h1>\n<p>***N.
