This is by far the coolest sermon resource that I have. And the endless commentaries, dictionaries, translations, Greek/Hebrew tools, helpful preaching illustrations, interactive images, and so many other helpful resources are just amazing. I may sound like I’m talking this thing up, but honestly, if one harnesses the power of this digital bible study tool, it really creates an opportunity to dive deeper than ever before into the Scriptures and history. For me, a biblical studies nerd: this is a huge win!

Logos Bible Software is the first place I go for insights about any paper I’m writing, sermon I’m preparing, or simply for chasing theological rabbit trails. It’s amazing how the indexed search features for all of my resources saves me time and makes me a better communicator. If you love to study the Scriptures, Logos saves hours of effort and highlights the best information in the process. Yes, having hard copies around can be helpful at times, but having a Logos library is helpful all the time. I can’t recommend this resource enough to pastors, scholars, and armchair theologians alike!

Cool Features

There is no doubt that the features of Logos Bible Software are great. Some that I love, that have been part of Logos for some time include: being able to type a reference into a search box and have every commentary, translation, and resource in a parallel format; the ability to do word searches in important books (for me, the resources I have on Paul that are Logos based, are so helpful for researching themes… goodbye index!); and the option to click on a word and have language tools point out the nuances of Greek terminology. These things continue be helpful and are refined with every new edition of Logos. But there are features in the Logos 7 Packages that I’m also excited about. Here are some of them…

Sermon Editing

I prep sermons. And honestly, as I review Logos I’m noticing how this could be a helpful tool. Sermon Editor does some really incredible things. For instance, you can type a bible reference and it automatically populates it for your outline. Not only so, but you can have the sermon editor tool populate a slide for Powerpoint, Propresenter, Easy Worship, or Logos’ own Proclaim software. Here is a screen shot of a recent sermon I gave:

What a sermon editor layout looks like in Logos 7.

As you look at the image, notice what I am utilizing. On the left is an instant outline creator, complete with automatic slide production. It is user friendly, especially if you have ever written a blog or used similar settings. Just utilize headings, blockquotes, etc. to organize a talk with all of your resources in one place. You can also see that in the middle column there is my text along with several commentary resources. Seriously, can’t beat this when it comes to organizing all of your key content and researching big ideas. And, FYI, because I know that some folks will ask– the sermon that you see being prepped above is available here:

Concordance Tool

Now, in the same sermon prep mode–a talk on Revelation 5–notice how bringing up a concordance helps me map out where important words pop up in the passage at hand.

Without a doubt, I’m immediately confronted with the fact that “scroll” shows up lots in this one chapter alone. Now I might ask: “Why is the scroll image so important to this section of John’s Apocalypse?” Logos has a quick video on the power of this tool, which you can view here:

Entering the Historical World of the Scriptures Tools

Not only do the sermon editor and concordance resources save tons of time and, well, make a preacher looks pretty sharp, but the tools that allow you to dig into the broader biblical and historical context are pretty amazing. Continuing work on my current sermon, here is what happens when I look up the allusions to the Hebrew Scriptures from Revelation 5. With a couple of clicks, I discover that the throne imagery is also present in the apocryphal book of of Sirach!

I’m not sure if you are with me, but as an anabaptist pastor, I love the chance to quote me some apocrypha once in awhile. And while I’m not expert on those sorts of texts, Logos was an expert for me!

Final Thoughts

I really dig Logos Bible Software. I’m impressed with Logos 7, as you can tell. It does take some learning to be able to truly utilize all the features, but even the basic features (requiring no training at all), are worth their research weight in gold. Of every digital resource, this is the first one I point pastors, theologians, scholars, and arm-chair thinkers to.

And hey, my physical library–aka the garage–is an unorganized mess. I love those books, but they aren’t always as helpful as a well indexed Logos resource. This software will take a decent investment (they offer installment plans to help!), but if you can swing it, it is worth it! I highly recommend Logos 7 and look forward to learning more about the functions therewithin!
