Lord, How Can You Stand Us?

We are the dirt beneath Your fingernails

Lord, how can You stand us?

We are the briar caught in Your robe

Lord, how can You stand us?

You wash us off,

You pull us free,

yet we remain what we are—

To bemoan and defile and tear

Tear tender holes through Your flesh, through the wholly untrodden paths of Your heart that pump the blood we drink

To drink blood we spill

And spit

And wretch

We treat You as a mud puddle

when You are the Eternal Ocean,

poured through us

Lord, how can You stand us?
