It seems pressure remains high on IOC Chairman Jacques Rogge to honor the Munich 11. \u00a0I couldn\u2019t be gladder. \u00a0I am not deluded enough to believe he will bow to international opinion, but I am heartened by the attention the issue has received.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0\u201cDoing the Right Thing\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cBearing the Torch\u201d<\/a>, Ken Kovacs and I presented our own reasons we felt honoring the Olympians slain in Munich in 1972 was a societal and moral imperative. \u00a0We were far from alone in our pleas, and our voices joined many others, some of whose actions spoke louder than words.<\/p>\n

Here are some examples of how people from all corners of the globe have made their opinions known.<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0Bob Costas\u00a0followed through on plans<\/a>\u00a0to hold his own moment of silence during the opening ceremonies, while the Israeli athletes entered the stadium, in protest of the IOC\u2019s refusal to do so.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0At least 200 people held their own\u00a0tribute in Trafalgar Square<\/a>\u00a0to the fallen athletes on the morning the London Olympics began. \u00a0Over 20,000 were reported to participate in other venues throughout the host city.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0More than 30 members of\u00a0the Italian delegation held it\u2019s own tribute<\/a>\u00a0to show solidarity with Israel and the familes of the slain athletes. \u00a0They stood with members of the Israeli delegation outside the quarters of the Israeli athletes for a minute of silence.<\/p>\n

4. \u00a018-year-old Aly Raisman, the Jewish-American girl who captured gold with her floor routine (fittingly performed to \u201cHava Nagila\u201d,)\u00a0paid tribute to the Munich 11<\/a>\u00a0in her interviews with reporters after her victory. \u00a0She diplomatically, but pointedly, said she would have supported and respected a moment of silence had the IOC chosen to hold one.<\/p>\n

5. \u00a0Finally, ever the optimist,\u00a0Former Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Cotler wrote to Mr. Rogge<\/a>. \u00a0He insisted it is not too late to do what is right. \u00a0He asked Rogge to redeem himself by holding a moment of silence for the slain Israeli athletes and coaches during the Olympics\u2019 Closing Ceremony. \u00a0It\u2019s a moving and poignant plea, which at the same time, pulls no punches in its analysis of what denying this request would signify.<\/p>\n

I am not holding my breath. \u00a0I am, however, moved and comforted that so many around the world have rallied to the sides of these families who suffered through the ultimate loss while the Games went on. \u00a0From the bottom of my heart, I thank them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
