It\u2019s time to resurrect a little series I did a little while back: Shooting Sacred Evangelical Cows.\u00a0 This time, my target is something I\u2019ll call \u201cposeur coffee drinking.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a makeshift title, I admit, but I think you\u2019ll see that it has merit.<\/p>\n
From where does this latest installment of SSEC proceed, you ask?\u00a0 Here\u2019s where: from perusing any number of blogs run by folks in my peer group: youngish, theologically oriented, book-loving, culturally plugged in, ironically inclined, that sort of thing.<\/p>\n
What you find on many websites is some kind of description like this: \u201cI love reformed theology, U2, anything by Steven Soderbergh, and a fresh cup of joe.\u201d\u00a0 Or maybe: \u201cMy interests are theology, issues of social justice, Beastie Boys, and an Americano from (fill in neighborhood coffee shop here).\u201d\u00a0 Or perhaps: \u201cCan\u2019t resist a good Bonhoeffer quotation, Edwardsean philosophy, and a venti mocha with light whip.\u201d<\/p>\n
You get the point.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing about this situation: there\u2019s nothing ironic or unique about liking coffee.\u00a0 We all like coffee.\u00a0 Coffee is good.\u00a0 Made well, it\u2019s really good.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of like saying you like bread.\u00a0 \u201cAnything by Piper, Band of Horses<\/em>, and Pepperidge Farm rocks my world.\u201d\u00a0 Everyone likes bread.\u00a0 And everyone likes coffee.<\/p>\n This includes me.\u00a0 I like coffee.\u00a0 I like mochas with a fierce passion.\u00a0 I like a cappucino with dessert.\u00a0 Coffee is good.\u00a0 This, however, sets me apart from approximately no one.\u00a0 Coffee is one of the pleasures of this fallen world.\u00a0 I and a good portion of the rest of the human race enjoy it.<\/p>\n So, reformed hipster\/progressive\/student\/master-of-irony, next time you consider charting your particular coffee-related beverage of choice, next time you wear it as a distinctive identity marker, remember: everyone else likes coffee.\u00a0 Work harder on the goatee pattern, find another brand of undiscovered denim, dig even deeper in the alternative music shop to lay hands on the truly avant-garde musical act, because your love for coffee\u2013it ain\u2019t getting you there.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" It\u2019s time to resurrect a little series I did a little while back: Shooting Sacred Evangelical Cows.\u00a0 This time, my target is something I\u2019ll call \u201cposeur coffee drinking.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a makeshift title, I admit, but I think you\u2019ll see that it has merit.
