Adoption as mission:<\/p>\n

\u201cAdoption is also mission<\/em>\u2026.Without the theological aspect, the growing Christian emphasis on orphan care too often seems like one more cause wristband for compassionate conservative evangelicals to wear until the trend dies down.\u201d (p. 20)<\/p>\n

What true love looks like:<\/p>\n

\u201cLove based on the preservation and protection of genetic material makes sense in a Darwinian\u2013not a Christian\u2013view of reality.\u201d (p. 20)<\/p>\n

The sole commonality of the gospel:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat would happen if the world saw fewer \u201cwhite churches\u201d and \u201cblack churches,\u201d fewer \u201cblue-collar churches\u201d and \u201cwhite-collar churches,\u201d and fewer baby boomer and emerging churches, and saw more churches whose members have little common except being saved by the gospel?\u201d (p. 20)<\/p>\n

Perhaps my favorite:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe demonic rulers of the age hate orphans because they hate babies\u2013and have from Pharoah to Moloch to Herod to the divorce culture to malaria to HIV\/AIDS.\u00a0 They hate foster care and orphan advocacy because these actions are icons of the gospel\u2019s eternal reality.\u201d (p. 21)<\/p>\n

On how adoption and evangelism work together to create a missional culture:<\/p>\n

\u201cA conscience that\u2019s burdened for orphans, rather than seared over in the quest for more stuff, will be burdened for spiritual orphans.\u00a0 A church that learns to love beyond the borders of biology will learn to do mission outside the borders of geography.\u201d (p. 22)<\/p>\n

This one chills your blood:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe universe around us is creepily silent\u2013like an orphanage in which the children no longer believe they will be heard.\u00a0 But if we listen with Galilean ears, we can hear the quiet desperation of thumbs being sucked, of cribs being rocked.\u00a0 As we welcome orphans into our homes, we can show the orphaned universe what it means to belong to a God who welcomes the fatherless.\u201d (p. 22)<\/p>\n
